Deserving?

Featured Replies

I really don't know how to ask this question, but I'll give it a shot.

With the Obama Plan looming, it got me to thinking. Does EVERY human in this country have a RIGHT to my/your time, money or property?

At the risk of sounding cold...Is EVERYONE deserving of a handout?

Please be easy on me.:scared:

I know what my answer is but then again I'm just a heartless conservative with no compassion for his fellow man.

NO !

"Love your neighbor as yourself"

I think someone important said this, but what do I know.

Everyone is deserving of help. Handouts only go so far. A hand up is a better method.

Maybe another question should be asked. Do all children in the country DESERVE to be helped via our own wealth - money, property, time?

"...if any would not work, neither should he eat." IIThess.3:10 is in there also.

No, we should not have to take care of bums.

The question is NOT whether Jesus said we should give charity- that is a no-brainer. The question is whether Jesus would support a system that is doomed for failure- because as the economy suffers, no one suffers more than the poor.. High taxes and wealth redistribution can not succeed for a variety of reasons.

First of all, you have the deadweight losses associated with taxes.

Secondly, the higher the tax rate, the less profitable business risks become- and when less risks are taken, less economic growth happens. Economic growth, in turn, helps everyone, especially the poor. For example, let's say Pfizer is researching a drug to cure AIDS. A cure for AIDS would be incredibly profitable, but also incredibly expensive. If they figure to spend $5 billion in R&D and, if they find it, to make a profit of $20B, they will consider the risk. However, as taxes raise, profits decrease, and perhaps that risk isn't worth it anymore.

Thirdly, you have the simple fact that, as taxes are raised, more money is put in the hands of the government. Even if you have the most purely-hearted, generously motivated government officials, no one person or group has the intelligence and knowledge to be able to say what the most efficient use of all the economy's resources is. There simply is no objective way of determining how resources should be used. It must come down to the subjective ideas of government agents, and this only leads to problems.

Rather, it is more efficient for the resources to be dividided among millions of individuals, each of whom determines the most efficient way to manage their own resources. And this is the difference- this is not a subjective process, but rather objective. When economic resources are being wasted, the economic agent will fail. When economic resources are being used efficiently, the economic agent will succeed and make a profit. Consumer demand steers the economy to one that wastes little. However, with no profit motive, there is no way for government to recognize when resources are being used efficienty.

I agree with this to a point. We should help those who are trying to help themsevles. Perhaps working minimum wage jobs, raising families without health insurance.

FWIW, far, far less than 20% of minimum wage workers are from low-income families

Please check the context of that message and to whom it is being said. I think you will find that it does not say what you think it says. But that is just silly oh me, trying to actually read the scripture.

If a person asks for your coat, give them your shirt also

if a person asks you to walk one mile, go with them two.

I don't see any restrictions placed on these statements related to whether or not either of the requests came from people who deserved to be helped.

So...Is there anything you think EVERYONE (exclude children) should be personally responsible for, other than giving your clothes away and paying taxes?

Then why don't you just go out and give all your clothes, shoes, food, shelter, etc. away because I'm sure there are a lot of bums that will sure take it all off your hands.:D
