Deserving?

Featured Replies

You didn't answer my question of "what do we do with the 'bums'." However, I will answer yours:

What do I suggest we do?

1) Love them.

2) Help take care of their immediate needs.

3) Help educate them, i.e., "teach a man to fish."

4) Help him/her see Christ through me. Not in the form of denouncing/criticizing/judging, but by what I do and how I treat others.

You asked a lot about what I do personally. I'm not looking for personal accolades, so I'm going to skip the details. Let it suffice to say that I help the poor without qualification. I don't check to see if they are "bums" or not first. I have dealt with the thankless and the untruthfulness of some, but that's not a reason to not help the next one.

Upon second glance, I guess that you did answer my question - "rebuke and tell them to repent of their sins." We'll just have to disagree on this one, I guess.

Those who have no history of mental instability get drafted into the Army where they can be productive members of society. They would have a job, health care and could possibly learn a trade in the process. That would solve a number of problems.

I'm not talking about people who have legitimate needs and are trying, I'm talking about "bums". I will give a suggestion of what we do with them, we stop giving them handouts, we stop feeding them, and stop acting like we care so much about them and tell them the truth.

1. If you love someone you want them to know the truth. True love is not some sentimental, fuzzy feeling.

2. Why should I help take care of their immediate needs when they will not make an effort to help with their needs?

3. The is a free and appropriate public education available already.

4. Their greatest need is Christ and they will never a have desire for Him until they are brought to the end of themselves.

Why is it that you have a right to judge people but no else has that right?

I'm not suggesting that you don't do your part, but I have seen people who act like they care so much for people and never do anything. They have all the answers, but just sit and judge people who put forth an effort.

You can do what you want, but I will not knowingly help a bum.

For clarification, I am talking about "bums," too.

The first bolded - surely you don't mean that?

The second bolded - who/where did I judge?

Again, I am not looking for personal recognition. However, I do give of myself by both money and deed.

I think that this is a good option, though I am not sure how some of our military veterans might feel about it. Maybe Leatherneck, nWo or some of the others might weigh in on it.

FWIW, any time that people used quotes from Jesus in regards to generosity and almsgiving as a reason to support wide-scale government wealth redistribution is misleading. While I support giving time, talent, and treasure to the poor, Jesus would never support a system that makes the poor worse off than they otherwise would be, which is exactly what wide-scale government wealth redistribution does.

I do not think it is a good idea, simply for the fact that compulsory military service, especially based on a socioeconomic class, is dangerous and is an infringement of rights (or at least a slippery slope).

They can join if they wish- why do we need to force them in?

My point is, if someone is truly a "bum" and all they do is manipulate and use people, they should not be encouraged in that wickedness. We are not doing them any favors by going along with their schemes and pretending we love them. We may care about them, but if we really want to show them love we need to be honest with them and correct them. That seems to be the way some are trying to raise their children and its not working, you know the, "I love my children too much to spank them" crowd. There are folks who act like they just love everybody to death and butter wouldn't melt in their mouth, but do they love people enough to rebuke them?

If I help someone and they are not appreciative then thats not that bad, but if they are just using me and others because they are too sorry to work, then thats another issue. Its not my responsibility to take care of professional bums.

You wrote, "Help him/her see Christ through me. Not in the form of denouncing/criticizing/ judging, but by what I do and how I treat others."

So I take it that you are judging me for judging dishonest behavior.

Thats good that you give, I commend you for that, and so do I, but there comes a point when I say, "no more" if they are not trying to help themselves and are being dishonest.

No one is excluded from personal responsibility, namely I am not excluded. My responsibility is to take care of those who are in need and those who ask for help. That is MY responsibility. I cannot judge someone else's responsibility and know whether or not they are fulfilling it, I can only know what mine is. What is YOUR responsibility in regards to others.

I give and help those that need it on a regular basis. Could I do more? Absolutely! Do I help the ones I think (not judge) are capable of helping themselves? Not near as much. Am I fulfilling my responsibilities in regards to others? Probably not. Do I think it is my responsibility to "take care" of all that are in need and those that ask for help? No, and I don't know anyone that can.

Look at IM4THEHOUNDS posts. What he says. I totally agree with him on this topic.

I have zero compassion or feel the need to attempt to help those that won't make the effort to better themselves. If that makes me heartless, oh well.

My goal was not to actually challenge you, but to point out that i cannot always worry about whether or not someone ELSE has fulfilled a notion of personal responsibility, I can only know as to whether or not I have fulfilled my level. Until I have done all I can do under that mantra I should not be deciding whether or nor someone else has

I would be willing to bet...Whoops no gambling allowed in Ky...:sssh:

I wonder what the percentage of Bums in the US are mentally capable of working a full or part time Job?And for the ones who are able I wonder How many would actually get hired...

This guy should be able to get a job quick...In our ever growing world of Technology...:thumb:
