Under the old class system (using those years only), I'd say:

 

1A: Danville

2A: Belfry

3A: Boyle County

4A: Trinity

 

3A is the only one you even have to think about with Boyle County and Highlands very very close. Danville is more clear cut under the old system as they had more titles and as many runners-up as NewCath.

 

Overall, it's Trinity pretty doggone easily.

One note about Fort Campbell is that since the current coaching staff has taken over (2002) they are:

 

73-16 (82%), 15-5 in the playoffs, and 2 State Championships.

 

Prior to Coach Berner they were 4-16 (2000-2001). I realize this is the team of the decade, but I just wanted to point that out.

I believe Highlands playoff record this decade is 31-5 and our regular season record is 73-17. Of those 17 regular season losses, , we've lost to Elder 3 times, Colerain 2 times, Henry Clay 2 times, Male 2 times, Boyle 1 time, Danville 1 time, Dixie Heights 1 time, Cov Cath 1 time, Lou X 2 times and Cols DeSales 2 times. By my calculation, only 6 of the losses are to schools our size (I believe DeSales would have been in our classification if they played in Ky so those 2 losses are part of the 6) or smaller (only Danville was smaller). Replace the other 11 regular season losses to bigger schools with wins (an assumption on my part no doubt) and the regular season record could be 84-6 for a 93.33 % which looks a lot better than the 81.11 % a 71-17 record brings with it. For the record, I am and will always count the 04 forfeits as wins. Mitchell was ultimately ruled eligible and the KHSAA should have rescinded the sanctions (including the forfeits) that they prematurely imposed. Take away the losses to Elder in 00 and 04, and the loss to Colerain in 08, we would have had 4 undefeated seasons in the decade so far (and would be sitting on a 30 game winning streak heading into this season). Having said that, I'm one of those Highlands fans that love the fact that we play a challenging schedule that helps prepare us for state. Winning state is much more important to me (and I believe the kids) than a won-loss record.

Can anyone track down most wins ever over a 10 year period? I would guess that Trinity's total under the Beatty tenure would be close to the top, if not the top.

 

Didn't Beechwood go to State 7 out of 8 years in the 90s? They may be close if the 15 game season had begun.

I think leatherneck and raiderbird makes interesting points. Highlands plays up in class and will play some tough games across the river. This is what makes the program ready for state playoffs. We have trouble with the depth of the OH big school programs but the program does not shy away from the competition and the outcome will be determined on the field. This might result in a lower %; however it is rich in tradition and always should be in consideration for a team of the decade.

Given Cov Cath's lack of recent playoff success (1 title since 1994 or 1997), maybe they ought to rethink this strategy.

Of the schools currently in 2A, only 5 have state titles, and Danville, Fort Campbell, and Nwport Central Catholic have the most. Danville and Newport Central Catholic are especially strong candidates, each with multiple titles and runner-up appearances.

Danville: 3 State Championships, 2 Runners-Up. 103-22 (.824) record overall, 30-6 (.833) playoff record

-2 consecutive state titles

-Finals appearances 4 out of 5 years (2000-2004)

-5 consecutive state semifinals appearances and 6 overall

 

Newport Central Catholic: 2 State Championships, 4 Runners-Up. 105-24 (.814) record overall, 32-7 (.821) playoff record

-2 consecutive state titles

-4 consecutive finals appearances (2005-2008)

-Made state quarterfinals every single season

 

Ultimately I believe Danville just nudges out NewCath, but a legitimate argument can be made for both.
