No real comparison to the 10th and 13th region here, The Mason County Fieldhouse is the capitol building of tenth region hoops and the tournament should be played there year in year out! For the record I'm not a Mason County fan but Maysville is the only place to hold the tournament IMO and many others! As for the 13th they where on a rotation so if they choose to rotate through Corbin so be it. There's only one regional tournament that holds the "elite" atmosphere and that is the 10th--at the Fieldhouse and hopefully the powers that be will wise up and send it back there. FOREVER

Do you know or can you find out? Will the Arena charge a percentage or a flat fee? Will the proceeds left over, divided among all the teams of the 13th, be enough to hold the attention of the bigger schools? How much will be left over? Who will set the ticket prices? Who will actually run the tournament?

I think it would be a good thing for the 13th to have it at this new arena. Sure, the city of Corbin would get a nice spinoff from folks patronizing local businesses, but not as much as some might think. For one thing, games would probably start at 6 and 8 p.m., which are prime-time restaurant hours. Most out-of-town folks because of work can't really make it there early enough to have time for a sit-down dinner, and they're not going to head to a restaurant at 10 p.m. at night, either.

 

The way I understand the rules to work, it is up for a vote among the schools in a particular district when it is their turn in the site selection rotation -- not all 17 schools in the region. So all Harlan Co. has to do when it's the 52nd's turn is sell their gym to their districtmates. That there will be a history of (likely) three years of the 13th being played at the new arena does work against them. I don't, however, think it would be fair to demand a payout of a certain threshold. They can't really guarantee something like that, and shouldn't be asked to the way a private business should.

 

And while the talk about the tradition of playing it at a HS gym is heart-warming and all, the fact is that playing region tournaments at HS gyms is usually not all that fan-friendly. The gyms tend to be miserably hot, parking is usually always a problem, lines at the concession stands are always very long. Plus, split sessions just plain suck. And from a convenience standpoint, Corbin is an ideal location. Most every school in the region is within a 45-60 minute drive, with Harlan and Harlan Co. the obvious exceptions.

 

And besides, with a region like the 13th, where questions of shaky officiating pepper seemingly every game discussion, I would think that holding it at a neutral site would help alleviate some of the hand-wringing over questions of impropriety.

Lets see what all of the folks from Laurel, Clay, Whitley, Knox and Bell Counties have to say too. They just may like having a shorter drive, better dining choices, better seating, not emptying the gym between games, parking close to Arena and etc... The players may also like the oppurtunity to play on a college size floor in a larger building (like they will see the following week at Rupp). Maybe we need a Poll on this subject along with the pros and cons.

The Arena sounds like a great choice. Why not make it easy on the fans traveling to all three games of the tournament(Corbin and South Laurel)

Pepper II, I like London's dining choices as much as the next guy, that's one of the many reasons why I live in Laurel County. No matter how you slice it, The Arena is better for the majority (not all) of the attendees of the 13th Region Tourny. Besides convenience factor for most, the Arena will also share some revenue with all schools participating instead of only 1 school getting all of the revenue.

I thought the regional money was divided among the participating teams in the past.

 

Better seating was mentioned. I heard the seats were pretty far from the court. I also heard they were taking shuttle buses to events because there were parking issues.

 

Les, I think I can get you a good seat at Harlan County High School if it's ever played there.
