April 16, 200917 yr Last time I went the WTO visited, and the whole city was on lockdown. One protester died, and it looked like a war zone with all the military. The first time I went I was sick for three days, I actually ran out of reading material.
April 16, 200917 yr I've been 3 different parts on different occasions. It has been a blast every time but I was soo happy to be back in the States! Cancun is pretty touristy so it's not bad if you go places like Sr Frogs or that area. We went on a jet ski/snorkle excursion that was a blast until we ate on the patio the last night we were there. The dock we left from was about 100 yds away and there were hundreds of alligators swimming in at sunset right where we left from! Seriously the buses are out of control there. They do about 80 in a 35 zone on the sidewalks lol. Don't go down into the old part of town where the flea market is. I got heckled with people wanting me to buy stuff. I wasn't there 3 minutes and they were trying to get me to buy Coke, Pot etc. It was REALLY rough around there. My wife and I got the heck out of there. The resorts are usually so nice that you don't have to go anywhere but there and the beach if that's what you want. One of the places we went was all inclusive and it was a monsterous resort so there was no reason to leave but we did to swim with the dolphins one day. That was a scary ride getting there! Mexico is Mexico IMO. You have to be careful but Cancun is pretty much a tourist spot. Stay on the beaten path and you should be fine. Have fun and get a little tan before you go! The sun is POWERFUL down there! The Beach water is amazing! We packed drinking water and were fine. One friend went to a real Mexican place because he is dumb and the burritoes were 50 cents. He got sick lol.
April 16, 200917 yr I have been there many times and never felt unsafe. I have heard if you take the bus not to be the last one off because they will take all your money. But I have taken the bus and taxi's to the down town part of the strip a lot and never had a problem. Also don't ignore the warning flags on the undertow. It doesn't matter how well you can swim if it's strong then your gone.
April 16, 200917 yr How safe is Mexico City these days? My dad is going to be traveling there on business later this month, so I'm hoping all will go well. He'll be doing some work for the Mexican government, and apparently he'll be picked at the airport and ushered around town by Mexican federal agents. Certainly, he'll be safe in their presence, right? Edited April 16, 200917 yr by 20/20Hindsight

Mrs C's company has a good sized business Mexico City. All American employees have armed guards in armor cars while they are there. The place is a hole in the earth. I have several Mexican friends, and even they say don't go to Mexico City.

If your dad is being taken care of by the gov't, he should be fine. I have a distributor in Mexico City. When I go down there, they pick me up at the airport, put me up in hotels with good security, and basically take care of my every need. I feel safe, but I would not want to be on my own down there. As far as Cancun goes, I would not leave the resort. That is why they are "all inclusive". They know it's not safe for you, so they provide everything for you.

I have several Mexican friends, and even they say don't go to Mexico City. Yikes. :scared: Sorry I asked. All I can say is that he better have some good federal agents with him.
April 16, 200917 yr I have been there many times and too, never felt unsafe. HOWEVER, these are different times. I have a friend in the travel industry who told me she would NOT go there. So far, the resorts have been safe, but there is a lot of violence around the outskirts. As she said, if they wanted to get into a resort, they could easily do it. Not much keeping them out. So if you go, stay ON the resort. Downtown Cancun is just a touristy place. Senior Frogs is overated IMO. The resorts have all you can eat/drink anyway. Personally, I wouldnt go. People on vacation, tend to relax and let their guard down, especially if there is alcohol involved. Some people rely on that happening. On the other hand, my brother is there now with his wife and five kids. :ohbrother: He wasnt worried in the least! So, I guess it boils down to each person's comfort level.
April 16, 200917 yr You will be fine. Even if you drink the water--all the resorts have filtered water and ice. The stuff you shouldn't drink is clearly labeled "non potable" so there is no mistaking it. The state run taxis are fine, too. How are you getting to and from the resort? Some people still get sick even if they only drink the water /ice at the resorts. I know from experience. Take some immodium and plenty of it just in case.
April 16, 200917 yr Spend your money in America, it is a country that has kind of a civil war right now.

I have several Mexican friends, and even they say don't go to Mexico City. Exactly!!! I work in the Monterrey area often and my friends there are afraid in Mexico City. Monterrey is now getting more dangerous. I have always felt safe there, but now when we travel there we are not to wear any of our shirts with company logos and not to leave the Hotel without one of our Mexican colleagues. The resort areas of Cancun should be safe. Like everyone says stay in the resort area.
April 16, 200917 yr Spend your money in America, it is a country that has kind of a civil war right now. I support your statement 100%. Right now is a good time to keep money in our own economy. However, I would not cancel a trip I had already paid for.
April 16, 200917 yr Years ago, when we first went to Cancun a doctor told us to take Pepto Bismol (liquid not pills-they will turn your tongue black), twice a day beginning the day before you go. He swore it will prevent most types of food/fluid borne stomach ailments. We have always done it. Never been sick and of course it helps prevent the other stomach problems that come with all you can eat/drink. Not really sure if it is the Pepto or not, but we dont take any chances! We once had a few people get sick there. Our resort had a continuous outdoor grilling of burgers/fries. The people who got sick ate a burger late in the day. I think the beef was not properly refrigerated during the day and it was out too long. So, if there is outdoor grilling going on, pay attention to where the meat is kept!
