I'm not sure if I 100% agree with this, but here is the argument.

 

1. The Nuggets went from a borderline playoff team in the last couple of years to a division winner and 2 seed in the playoffs this year. Want to measure value, look at the Nuggets vs. the Pistons with and without Billups.

 

2. While Wade is having a big season and reviving the Heat, the Nuggets have had a better season and at least as big a turn around thanks to Billups contributions to the team.

 

3. While Wade has gotten his team back to the playoffs, Billups has his team as a championship contender and an MVP should be measured (in part) on wins and loses.

 

Billups' numbers:

2008-09 Statistics

PPG: 17.9

RPG: 3.00

APG: 6.4

SPG: 1.5

 

Wade's numbers:

2008-09 Statistics

PPG: 30.2

RPG: 5.00

APG: 7.5

SPG: 2.2

 

What do folks think? Is there an argument to be made for Billups over Wade for MVP?

Put Wade with Melo and some of those players and see what their record would be. Plus Wade is leading Billups in every category listed and leads the NBA in scoring. While Billups is a star and is the main reason the Nuggets are where they are, it's not even close for me.

The reason I say so is that Denver would still win games without Billups. Maybe not as many, but they'd win. Miami doesn't win without Wade...

I agree that they may not be better than a number 5 seed, but I think they would be that at best and a playoff team for sure.

 

The only reason why I question what Wade could do in Denver is because of the whole A.I. experiment. I think their games are very similar, even though Wade is better at this point in his career than A.I. is. I don't know how much better he would make the Nuggets because he would need the ball and take shots away from Melo, Smith, Nene and those guys. Chauncey bring them the on the floor leader and distributor that this team needs.

Wade is a better player than Billups. However I think you are right that the Nuggets wouldn't be as good with Wade. Its just all about how a person fits in with a team. The Nuggets have a really good team, they just needed a good pg who could run the offense. They didn't need another star player who can score. So yeah Wade is the better player, but he wouldn't be whats best for that team.

Not the question; neither D-Wade or Billups will win the MVP IMO. I wanted to ask who deserves more consideration between the two of them understanding that maybe someone else will win it.

No way. Billups does not get as much Sports Center highlight time as Lebron, Kobe, or D-Wade. That is what the MVP is about right??????????????

'06-07 --> 45-37, #6 seed

'07-08 --> 50-32, #8 seed

'08-09 --> 54-27, #2 seed (to date)

 

The fact is, there are 6 games between Denver at 2 and Utah at 8 in the west. They're 9 games ahead of #9 Phoenix. Last season, Denver was 6 games behind #2 New Orleans and 2 ahead of #9 Golden State.

 

The Nuggets are six games better with Billups.

'07-08 --> 15-67, worst record in the league by 5 games

False. Neither are championship contenders. The Lakers are a lock out west and the Cavs and Celtics own the east.

That stats aren't close. The win differential isn't close. And, neither are contenders. There's no argument to make between Wade and Billups.
