Coach Beatty believes in getting his second string Varsity as many reps as possible versus letting them sit idle their Junior season like St.X has been known to do. If you are a Sophomore or Junior and you are on that second string, you are going to play JV until it's your turn to step up and start on Varsity. My son started two season's (Sophomore and Junior years) on JV and played mop up minutes on Varsity as a Junior. Being a Senior dominated program year in and out, this gives Trinity's players real game experience to step in their Senior season and make an impact. It's called developing your talent. I believe the light finally went off last season on Poplar Level Road. I'm told X played more Juniors on JV than they have in the past.

 

Nice insight. Cannot quarrel with the results. I'll take OUR GUY...over anyone else. YOu are always only one play away. I think we can all recall recent examples of key injuries and those "JV" kids [2nd-3rd-4th Teamers] had to step up and grow up in a hurry. The results speak for themselves.

Nothing subtle about it. St. Xavier plays a very few juniors, Trinity plays juniors who do not start at a particular position for varsity, during JV games (i.e. Stein and Smyth played WR on varsity while playing QB at JV level).Many junior lineman play for Trinity. I believe the Beatty system is working just fine.

There are no rules against playing anyone in the program at the JV level. A little used senior may play as long as both schools agree.

 

 

Definitely not a subtle difference. And very interesting about Stein and Smyth playing JV at another position on the same side of the ball. I think a lot of us might try to get a kid who's starting at DB on varsity as a Soph or Jr some JV reps at Wide Receiver or something, but that's pretty novel having the QB-of-the-future see the passing game "through the receiver's eyes" on the JV level.

 

Also, you're about the first person I've known of -- coach, fan, or administrator -- that understands a player in ANY grade is allowed to play JV in Kentucky. We often had a senior that came out for football after never having played that needed some "game reps" really bad so we'd play him in the first two JV games. In that case, I always let the opposing varsity head coach know the situation and only played the senior if he approved.

 

We also have had a senior or two that gave his heart and soul to the program for four years -- never missed a workout session or a practice -- but was obvious they wouldn't ever get Friday night playing time other than 'mop-up duty.' I always had our JV coaches point out to the opposing coach before the game which guys were seniors and explained the situation (it was usually obvious from watching them in warm-ups that they wouldn't be 'difference-makers' in the game). We never had an opposing coach say we couldn't play them.

As juniors, both Stein and Smyth saw significant minutes on varsity at wide receiver, and both started JV at QB.

If you are basing your prediction for this season off of what happened with these kids two or three years ago, you obviously have never played the game.
