In the past, I think this was true. I don't think it's the case right now. If Steve Wright left South Laurel you would not see them open up the coffers and find 4 jobs for assistant coaches for his replacement. Those jobs just aren't there right now.

 

However, realize that at least 2 of the school board members are football guys, (both originally from L'ville and 1 has a state championship ring). The county AD was the former head football coach at South Laurel & played football at Laurel County. This is the first time we have had this many board members with a true football background on the board. And speaking with them, they are trying to help look, but the teaching jobs just aren't there right now AND hiring for a teaching job is 100% up to the SBD at each school. I wish the jobs were there for more assistants, but if you can find them, let me know. I know of qualified teachers in Laurel County who are substituting just waiting for a full time teaching position to come open.

I'm not sure but I think the school principal is able to hire whomever they want to its not the SBD decision at all. They may have input but the principal has the final say so. South needs a coach pretty soon IMO.

My mistake. The principal does have final say but rarely goes against the recommendation of the SBD.

 

I also agree that South needs a coach very soon. School in Laurel County lets out 6-5-09, and they MUST have someone in place soon IMHO.

I don't know about Laurel Co. but I've known more than one princpal to hire who they want with no imput at all from the site base. With the right coach (one that stays awhile) there is no reason South and North can't have successful football programs.

I agree. I think North has their coach for the future in place and it would be good to see South do the same thing.

 

As far as the principal goes, I believe that the new overall AD Randy Leger will have a very large voice in the decision. I think between he and the SL AD Keith Gilbert, they want to find a long term coach who can build the program back up. I have faith in both these guys to find the right candidate.

That's what I'm saying - the rivalry between North and South is nothing compared to the days back then.

 

I have attended several 49th district basketball tournaments in the 60's. Let me tell you right now, there is no comparison to the rivalry now to what it use to be then. you didn't even want to be caught dating a girl from one of the other schools. It was dangerous, believe me. Football wasn't as bad. London dominated in football most of the time with Lily having some great teams too. Hazel Green was the basketball power house in the county most of time but Bush, Lily and London were very competitive.

Back to the S. Laurel FB job. It needs to be done quickly. The parents and kids can be thankful for Welch and Hayes that have stayed and continued the off season and spring practice.

It is the principal's hire. SBDMC has nothing to do with the hiring of coaches.

I was actually talking more about teacher hires as it relates to getting teaching jobs for assistant coaches. The principal can hire the coach, but if the assistant coaches have to have teaching jobs and the openings are at other county schools, it is up to the principal and sbdm council of that school.

It is pretty neat. Wish we did more in Laurel County to preserve the older traditions. From the 4 original high schools to the consolidated Laurel County high, a lot of the tradition has been ignored which caused much of it to be lost or forgotten.
