I am not 100% positive, but I believe he taught history. I believe either my niece of nephew had him in class at South Laurel, but cannot remember for sure which class.

Just have heard the same names tossed around lately. The two coodinators, Hayes and Welch from South Laurel, and Dixon, which I think is the brother of the Hazard coach, Roark from North Laurel and an Asst from Bell Co. I cant remember the name of the Bell Co asst. Just know its not Greer.

Have heard that it could very well be from inhouse just due to no teaching jobs available. Maybe Mountain Thunder or Leonidas have heard more about this than me.............Also heard that there could be an issue at North Laurel over not being able to get jobs for an assistant or two...... So if that is true then I would look for Hayes or Welch to get the South job simply due to numbers crunch.

 

 

Roark would be interesting. He played at SL, is teaching in Laurel County now, so this could be a very interesting candidate. I know he wants to be a head coach and has a lot of 'fire in his belly' so to speak. Great enthusiasm and obviously loves the game. I know that Rick Bowling (Ricky Bowling's dad) tried on numerous occasions to get SL to hire him as an assistant over the past several years.

This hire will show how serious the SL administration is about football.

Larry Welch is coaching at SL, but still teaching at NL (in fact, he was still teaching at NL where he used to be the head coach when he was an assistant coach at Rockcastle).

He was an assistant under Tom Larkey before he left for Harlan. Was the head coach at North Laurel before he went to Rock.

Let the South Laurel basketball job come open and you'll see how creative they are in Laurel Co.

I agree with the quote about a job being "created" or "opened". Just have a tough time seeing Laurel Co. having money problems, especially if this was basketball.

He has been the Head Coach for Laurel County when Polly was absent in the 70's. Was an assistant coach at Rockcastle in the early 80's, was a Head Coach at North Laurel in the 90's and was an assistant at Rockcastle County again for about 6 years in the 2000's.

Ah Jim, ... since you left the area a few years ago, some things have actually changed quite a bit.

 

I can't discuss with factual information why Coach Wright was chosen for that position, ... however, I do know that the school board has turned over a few members in the past few years. :sssh: The new members are VERY football friendly (both have supported various sports at both high schools due to their children and/or grandchildren playing football, soccer, softball, etc at those schools) . The well known leanings of certain school board members left with those members (really, one in particular).

 

Also, the overall county AD is Randy Leger who not only played football at Laurel County but was the former South Laurel football coach. If anyone wants football to succeed in Laurel County, it is Randy. However, his powers may be limited in these instances as they really don't have the open positions in the county.

 

I do agree with Blockbuster that the school system for years only gave lip service to really supporting football at either school. However, I truly believe that this has changed, .... the problem is that their support can only go so far. Folks outside of Laurel County can think what they like, but the fact it that the teaching openings just aren't there right now. And with former coaches still teaching, those positions are fewer and further between. Also, given the state of the economy, some teachers are holding off on retirement until a later date.

Why would South want to hire a coach that didn't even get picked up on the new staff at North?
