You said Chappel has to leave his teaching position at South because he took the Campbellsville job, and I was wondering if that only applies to head coaches, I know of a couple other asst coaches that teach at one school and coach another.

I believe he was kicked off the team. But, yes, that was some talent. I know that Delmas went to D1 Charleston Southern on scholarship. Conrad Cessna may still be the school's all time leading reciever , but chose baseball at G'town instead. Most know what Sizemore did at Corbin, ... ask any Redhound fan if he wasn't talented. H Clay Hodges was tough. Yes, they had talent. I didn't say D1 caliber talent, but how many teams have multiple D1 talent year in and year out? If so, name them please.

 

The fact is that he had talented athletes at North. What they do as a team is primarily the responsibility of the coaching staff. Les could probably name even more of the talent that was at North during the span than I could.

Congrats to Coach Welch! He will do an excellent job at SL and will be a great ambassador for the program and county. He did really well as HC for the Laurel County Cardinals, he actually has the best winning percentage of any coach at that school at 55%. Mountain Thunder, I don't think you can add Combs or Sizemore to the list, Combs never got to play but a few games and Sizemore transferred to Corbin after 1 or 2 years. They had some talent but the schedule was enormous for a fairly new program, with the likes of Henry Clay, Dunbar, Scott County, Newport Catholic, Scott County, Tates Creek, Middlesboro, Somerset, Lafayette, Clark County, Belfry, Breathitt County, Madison Central, Corbin, Rockcastle County and the Lexington schools were in the district. Regardless, that has been over 10 years ago and Coach Welch will do an excellent job and teach kids more than just football.

Not many teams could survive that schedule, hence the low numbers. The kids didn't want to go get there brains beat out everyweek.

At North Laurel, only 1. Mike Harville. He had a 17-15 record.

 

Only 4 coaches in the entire county has had a winning record and there has been 14 of them, so to single one guy out isn't fair. (Not directed at you hoops22)

Harville: 17-15 - 53% - 3 years - NL

Larkey: 21-20 - 51% - 4 years - LC

Some yes, others no. But apparently, since it is all based on talent, they must have only had more talent than Perry Central in 1999 and 2000. Those are 6 teams you have named in a 5 year span. Did they play all 6 of those teams in every season at North or was it spread out over 5 years?

 

In 1998, they played a VERY tough schedule without a doubt. Yes they did lose to Middlesboro in 1998 when the Jackets won the 1A title over Mayfield 27-6. M'boro beat them 52-0. They lost to Lafayette who was 3-7 and didn't make the 4A playoffs. They beat Knott Central who was 1-9. They lost to PLD 34-7 who was 5-7 that year. They beat Clay County who was 2-8. They lost to 5-5 Perry Co Central. They lost to Tates Creek, Henry Clay and Madison Central who were all very tough that year.

 

In 1999, here was their schedule (I bolded the teams I feel that as much talent as). I think they could have won 6 games that year instead of 1.

I thought 5 or 6 wins would have been okay that year. But 1 win? And while Bourbon was the defending state champs, they lost a lot of talent from that team.

 

We could say that about North Laurel in Abbott's first year. They were 3-7 and lost 5 games by a TD or less.
