I think South has a few quality coaches...they have some young guys in place that would also likely stay on board...IF they are loyal. LOYALTY is crucial in a football program, especially when keeping assistants on board from a previous staff.

 

A lot of head coaches like starting with a clean slate. I am sure that these assistants you are refering to are great coaches but in most cases it is a hinderance more so than a help to have someone that the players have a previous relationship with when trying to establish a new team idenity.

I agree 100% Leonidas, but you have to make the most of a situation...I'd like a clean slate too, but that may not be the reality of the situation...I would at least give the guys in place a chance, interview them etc. Then I may keep em or cut em loose.

Chris Hays is the one guy that has been there a while that they really HAVE to keep. Some of their younger coaches have great energy, but still need to mature a little bit to be considered really good coaches. They definitely love the game though.

One certainly must know/learn the difference in being a coach and a fan/cheerleader with a whistle.

Just have heard the same names tossed around lately. The two coodinators, Hayes and Welch from South Laurel, and Dixon, which I think is the brother of the Hazard coach, Roark from North Laurel and an Asst from Bell Co. I cant remember the name of the Bell Co asst. Just know its not Greer.

Have heard that it could very well be from inhouse just due to no teaching jobs available. Maybe Mountain Thunder or Leonidas have heard more about this than me.............Also heard that there could be an issue at North Laurel over not being able to get jobs for an assistant or two...... So if that is true then I would look for Hayes or Welch to get the South job simply due to numbers crunch.

Coach Frazier is a great coach, wonderful leader and great role model for young men. I didnt hear any names on the assistants and it could just be one as far as that goes, not 100% sure.........maybe Leonidas or Mountain Thunder can add some input on that situation. As far as your second question..........IMHO some sports are taken serious just that it differs at the two schools. Alot of the success can be attributed to the parents and the time and $$$$$ that they spend on getting their kids envolved at a young age. All of the travel teams that form and the tournaments they attend.

Laurel County does take athletics seriously. However, they do not create jobs for incoming assistant coaches. If they jobs are available, they get first priority, ... but if they aren't, ... it makes it difficult. Like most school systems, they don't have the money just laying around to create a teaching job for which there is no need.

 

I have heard that North is having a difficult time finding a job for one of the assistants that Larkey is wanting to bring in, but have not had this confirmed by the principal or AD. This may put a different spin on the SL job if there aren't any other jobs available in the county for new coaches. However, with Chappell leaving, they will have at least 1 job opening. Some openings are not 100% sure on the teaching front until the school year ends if the teach has not made it official that they are leaving/retiring.

 

EG. Abbott resigns as NL coach, but is still teaching. Roark won't be coaching at NL, but is still teaching. Larry Welch is coaching at SL, but still teaching at NL (in fact, he was still teaching at NL where he used to be the head coach when he was an assistant coach at Rockcastle).

I am not 100% positive, but I believe he taught history. I believe either my niece of nephew had him in class at South Laurel, but cannot remember for sure which class.
