  1. It was a late hit. The run went to the left and the whistle had just sounded when a HC player took down a BC player away from the play, way away, on the right side of the field. Officiating crew was from HC, they're one of the top crews in the area and done a terrific job. They let both teams play a little and only threw the hankies when they had to. One thing was confusing though, I thought it should have been 1st and 15 after the late hit penalty, not 1st and 10. HC got the 1st down at the six, than marked off the penalty back to the 21. I'm sure it was right, just didn't make much sense
  2. Great game by both teams!!!! Bell made a few key adjustments at the half on defense that proved to be the difference. Was impressed by the HC crowd, not sure I can remember a time when the visitors had more in the stands than Bell. Where were you Big Blue Nation???? I know the weather was bad, but this was a huge game on sr night... HC should be playing in Bowling Green in five weeks. Hopefully Bell will be also, but we got so shafted by the KHSAA in the re-alignment, lol, on the southeast border of the state, but in the WEST section of the playoffs.
  3. You're right MT, I completely forgot about him, to my knowledge he is the only non-coach on the committee. He actually is over the all-star stuff I think. I was always under the impression that he chose who the committee members were and stuff like that. I have no knowledge of the "problem" he may or may not have with Laurel County, but like or dislike him, he tirelessly promotes fastpitch. I remember when he started the first all-star game between the 12th and 13th in 98. Or at least I think it was the first one.
  4. Initially each head coach that's a member of the coach's association nominates up to 3 players, usually from their own team. Then there's two committees, east and west. Usually 10 or so coaches make up each committee. They choose the members of each team to compete against each other in the annual "East-West" Game. Then from those two teams, the "Kentucky" All-Stars are chosen. I'm not a 100% sure about who makes the "Kentucky" choices, but I think it may be the coaches involved in the actual "East-West" game. There's both a jr and sr squad for the East-West games so a lot of players from around the state get a chance to participate. I should say that's how it was chosen in year's past, I'm just guessing it's still the same way. Shirer does play v'ball and you're right, she's a tremendous athlete.
  5. Gotta agree with you MT. I was shocked when I saw Akins wasn't on the team. I wonder if maybe it was just a situation that she was going to be out of town or something when they were playing. At least I hope that it was something like that. But looks like they would have named her to the team and then just chosen an alternate.
  6. I agree about Corbin, I think it's more about them getting better than SL "coming back to the pack".
  7. I knew Clay had won a region, they beat Bell in Manchester in the finals. But I think it was 96, not 97. Clay is a basketball powerhouse, but I don't feel one regional title makes you a "powerhouse". That's why I only included the three teams that I did.
  8. I knew you two would come through for me on the info about the 2/3 sport athletes. I agree Thunder about kids playing more than one sport. You see burnout problems more and more these days.
  9. Guys give Les a break. Did you notice what time the story was posted on the website, something like 12:30 AM? It may have just been a case of getting the news late and not having a chance to try to get in touch with Elam because of the late hour. But I'm not sure that he even had to contact Elam. He had the confirmation. A quote would have been nice, but not necessary. Besides, it's the supt.'s responsibility to contact Elam before anything is released.
  10. Sorry, you're right, Clay isn't, I meant to type Cumberland. Even though they no longer exist, I think they still have to be mentioned. I also feel as if maybe his statement was meant for this year. Moved on:walk:
  11. To Cards1b21, I'm a little confused. I've went back over the thread and maybe I'm missing it, but where does anyone say Bell is a Powerhouse in baseball??? Only a less-than intelligent person would think that. Anyone following baseball, saw this 2 year run coming when these kids were in middle school. And I would say the comment about Greer was in a negative fashion. Gotta agree with Mtn. Thunder, not sure where your "stats" post came from. Anyone that follows the sport knows that Corbin, Clay, and Middlesboro are the powerhouses in the 13th in baseball. I guess SL would be included, I'm not sure what they did in the 12th, but only being in the 13th for 4 years kinda makes it a borderline reference. Just trying to understand your logic and point???
  12. I didn't realize Elam had been there 8 years. Or at least I think that's what Les's article said. He took over for JD correct??? I agree with you about the girls program. And let me make it clear, I'm not bashing, just not sure how you fire Elam, regardless of cause, and keep the girls coach. Does anyone know what his overall W-L record is??? Again not bashing, but firing Elam, makes it almost impossible not to analyze the success of the girls program.
  13. To Les and Mtn. Thunder, I'm curious, how many of the NL and SL starters play bball and/or vball? I know several from Corbin and Harlan Co, play one other, if not both. Actually, I'd say most schools in the 13th, have a big crossover ratio. some of the posts were talking about travel/summer ball, but for most schools, those kids are at bball camps or starting v'ball practice/conditioning.
  14. Great advice WC. To the person who said Bell had no heart, you're a very poor judge of character. As Jrs. they won the 1st ever baseball region at the school and go 12-1 in football, losing to eventual 4A champs LexCath. As Srs. they got back to the finals in baseball and go 15-0 in football. All 7 baseball srs, Greer, Overbay, Ely, Zachary, Simpson, Slusher, and Merrick played key parts in the football state title. You don't accomplish all of that without a ton of talent and a "Secretariat" sized heart.
  15. Les, we finally agree on something, lol. I believe this was Corbin's first trip to the finals and they played very well. We both have talked about how good North's offense has been at different times during the season, but to hold North to only two runs says alot about Corbin's defense and pitching. Good Luck to North next week in Owensboro!!!!
  16. Meant to ask this earlier, but got sidetracked, does anyone have details on the Knox Central-Pineville game?
  17. ??? Not sure what the last part means, but never said I didn't respect what M'boro has done. Notice I said they DOMINATED the 13th. From 99-04 I don't think they took a loss in region until the semi-finals in the 05 regional tournament. I can't remember if he was coaching when Cumberland beat M'boro in the all A or not. You're right about Bell also, they've not beat M'boro since 98. I have no sour grapes as you put it, toward the man, he got himself a great team. I just believe he should have accomplished more than he did after all of the promises when he was hired. He inherited a lot of talent including a great group of freshmen. Really not even "bashing" him, as much as disagreeing with you about them having a "fine" season.
  18. It's easy to do that when you have all-state caliber players at each position. Middlesboro won the first region in 95 with Kenny Roark coaching, so I wouldn't necessarily say he built it. And after that great group graduated in 04, he lost in the semi-finals to Rock and in 06 in the finals to South I believe. I believe in giving credit where credit is due and Middlesboro did DOMINATE the region from 99 to 04, but it's easy to win with great talent. He uses youth as an excuse for losing, good coaches don't make excuses. That and I got to listen to him once when he was at Middlesboro speak, way too much I's, my's, and me's... :puke:
  19. I'm not sure how they select it. Used to it was based heavily on input from the softball advisory committee, made up mostly of coaches. Of course other things went into it also, but then-asst. commissioner Boucher listened closely to the advisory committees of the sports he was over. That only makes sense that they want to play it on dirt, as they've played almost all of their games. I still remember when almost everyone had grass back in the mid 90's. LOL, the region was played on grass at Cawood in 2000. They cut base paths out on the Cawood baseball field because the softball field was in too bad of shape
  20. LOL, here we go again, what part of "my preference" was tough to understand?
  21. Yea I know, it was at Jack Fisher Park in O'boro. Been going since 97 I think. It was at Sky View in 06 and 07. Wasn't talking about the fields, just like J-town's location. Better accomodations, more to do and easier drive. But again, just my preference
  22. Yea, I agree. Wasn't downing Corbin at all, they've got great players. But come postseason, NL is almost unbeatable over the last 4-5 years. Brock has a good rise ball also. SL had several popups and weak flyballs tonight. Wouldn't call 9-19 a "fine season", Bell only lost two srs last year and played an average schedule at best. The kids have the talent and will, got to watch them a few times, just wonder about the coaching. Loved Hart's reaction tonight when he won, straight to his knees after the last out. He's truely a class act!!!
  23. I agree, Corbin is definitely clicking, but North is still North. My mistake on the site, I thought J-town had it again this year and Owensboro got it back next year. Guess it was just wishful thinking, J-town is a much better place IMO.
