Megan Taylor, Sydney Herrell and Blake Johnson came up big.

Congrats to both teams. Corbin coach Chris Hart has done an outstanding job with his program.

Agree on the 3 players named. Taylor is a junior and both Herrell and Johnson are 8th graders.

I have been impressed with the defensive improvements that Corbin has made this year. That team has really stepped up in a big way.

Les, we finally agree on something, lol. I believe this was Corbin's first trip to the finals and they played very well. We both have talked about how good North's offense has been at different times during the season, but to hold North to only two runs says alot about Corbin's defense and pitching. Good Luck to North next week in Owensboro!!!!

Especially Corbin's defense. They made some HUGE plays that kept this game from getting blown open. Centerfielder made an amazing diving catch that saved a 2 run double in the first 4 innings, plus some solid play from the shortstop. North's offense has been pretty effective all year. But after scoring 14 on Corbin in the first outing, .. the Lady Hounds held them to 1 run in their 2nd meeting and 2 in this game. Impressive! The problem is that they just can't seem to score on North. The defense definitely did their job, just need to find a way to pick up some solid hits off of North's pitching, and lil Megan Taylor is tough.

Corbin is closing the gap between themselves and the two Laurel Co. schools and should be good again next year as I think they only lose two seniors(Shirar and Igo). They need to continue getting girls to play in the youth league and build upon that foundation. A great season for the Lady Hounds and Coach Hart.:thumb: Good luck to North Laurel at state.

North loses 2 seniors, Akins and Brock. One of the 8th graders was all region and this group of 8th graders is the best group I have seen. As 7th graders they played more JV and frosh games than middle school games. They were minor league and little league state champs (got within 2-3 games from the world series) and Weaver will only make them better. When North lost 6 seniors last year, many thought that if you were going to get them, this was the year to do it. Losing Akins and Brock will hurt next year, but it is a good thing he has so much young talent.

For Corbin, Losing Shirar & Igo will hurt. Shirar is flat out a very tough shortstop who just kept getting better every year! Hart did a fantastic job, especially on the defensive side. They had girls making plays all over the field. When it mattered most, the Lady Hounds really stepped up their game and this will give them something to build on!!! :thumb:

Losing a shortstop is huge in softball, unless you have a solid one returning. Corbin has closed the gap with South Laurel, but to get on the level of North Laurel, Corbin's players MUST play summer ball and that means travel ball.

Both North and South treat the sport as a year around thing and that's what you have to do if you want to compete for a state crown, not just a region title.

Coach Hart and his staff are busting their behinds and it is showing with the girls.

Here's the difference to me, ... depth. One of North Laurel's best players (Cordero) who was all state as an 8th grader a few years ago, breaks her hand just before the regional tourney. She cannot play, but has been a starter for 3 seasons. Weaver starts an 8th grader (Johnson) who hadn't started a game all year and she goes 2/3 at the plate and makes numerous defensive stops from the hot corner. Johnson along with Herrell, Smith, Baldwin and the other 8th graders, played frosh/jv games last spring and travel ball this past summer. After losing 6 seniors, North Laurel still played a brutal varsity schedule and just reloaded. If you want to take the next step up, travel ball is the way to go.

That's the thing a lot of people don't realize ... to be successful (I mean on the state level) you've got to play travel ball and that means beginning at the ages of eight and up, not when you get 12 or 13.

This has become true in almost every sport.

North Laurel softball is at a different level than everyone else in the 13th region. South has been a clear #2, although teams such as Corbin and Harlan Co. may be nipping at their heels. Some of the Corbin players don't start playing until middle school, which leaves a lot of ground to make up.

North is #1 in KHSAA all time wins. South is #8 (last time I checked). Pretty tough to have 2 of the top 10 winning programs in your region.

Hart has taken an interest in the middle school program and that will help to pay off in the long run.

Yeah, but I mean, North and South has been doing for the past lord knows how many years.

To Les and Mtn. Thunder, I'm curious, how many of the NL and SL starters play bball and/or vball? I know several from Corbin and Harlan Co, play one other, if not both. Actually, I'd say most schools in the 13th, have a big crossover ratio. some of the posts were talking about travel/summer ball, but for most schools, those kids are at bball camps or starting v'ball practice/conditioning.
