The Hines Ward Rule

Featured Replies

I remember this being a huge debate last year when it happen:

The third accepted proposal involves a play in which Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward made a block that resulted in a broken jaw for Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers. A 15-yard penalty will be enforced if a player delivers a blindside block to the head of a defender using his helmet, forearm or shoulder. The penalty will be enforced if a helmet, shoulder or forearm strikes the head or neck of the defender.

Wonder if he will keep doing it now?

Wonder when they will start a flag football league?

I don't remember Ward hitting Rivers in the head.

The top of his helmet hit him in the chin area IMO. Or if anything it did get him in the neck, so that would still be against the new rule.

You don't think that a rule prohibiting people from going helmet-to-helmet on a blindside hit is a good idea?

It's not about turning the NFL into a league for pansies. It's about the protection of the players who the owners have invested millions of dollars in.

At least the thug finally has his own rule. The icing on the cake of his dirty well earned legacy.

But it seems it goes well beyond helmet to helmet, which was already in place.

Make it a rule, but only after someone knocks Ward silly doing the same thing.

Too funny.

^ Not even close, his helmet obviously hit him in the chin. Someone had a blown up picture of it at one point. I'm not saying its dirty but I like this rule. There is no need for someone to be getting put in danger like that. It could be career/life threatening.

I like the rule.

However, River's helmet was never touched. Look at the video at about the 15 second mark where they show it in slow motion. No contact with anything other than the pads.

How did he break his jaw then? Pure impact not a chance, he hit his chin with this top of his helmet bottom line.

I hate the Steelers but unlike everyone else I think Hines Ward is one of the toughest players in the league. Don't get me wrong I can't stand him because he plays for the Steelers but he is a hard nosed player. He is one of the only players I like on the Steelers team. I take that back I like Troy and Ben as well. They play the game like it is supposed to be played. I can't say the same thing for some of their other players on Defense.
