State Tournament Format

Featured Replies

Leave the format alone. The past two years the team who played the second game on saturday morning has won the state title. These kids play 2-4 games a day during the summer for AAU, so rest is not a factor. There is a reason its called the Greatest Show In Hoops, and its proved year in and year out. This year was no exception. Anyone who wants to change the format just wants to complain because their team did not win this year. For 4 days out of the year all eyes in the state of Kentucky from every corner of the state are focused on Rupp Arena watching exciting action unfold as we see high school basketball at its best. Lets no change something that doesn't need changing.

Nope. Holmes was the best team in the tournament, and with more rest it probably would have just made them even better.

Agreed. This might have been the second title in a row, had they got to rest last year.

I would play the semis at 6:00 and 7:45 Sat. Night and the finals at 3:00 pm on Sunday afternoon. I was afraid someone would get hurt from tired muscles. Like Pittman was struggling with his legs last night. I would hate to see a D1 talent get an injury that might knock them out of a full ride from a injury related to fatigue.JMO

My thoughts exactly.

If you screw with the format too much, you will lose some of the neutral crowd.

This is the only change I would make!

Although the lower bracket team won this year, it's tough to play a game sometimes less than six hours after your first game of the day finishes, while the upper bracket team can rest for an additional two to two and a half hours longer. It might not sound like a lot but it is if you are the ones playing.

Think of the crowds for a late Saturday afternoon final four and by moving the game to Sunday afternoon think of the additional fans who can come to the championship games.

BTW, the All "A" Classic seems to have no problem with doing it this way at all!

That is at least 2 years in a row the lower bracket team has won because Mason Co. was lower bracket last year vs Holmes.

I am a Holmes fan, and rest had nothing to do with last year... We had no answer for Miller. That would have been the case with rest or without. Lets just enjoy this one right now and not stir up the pot to much....

Missing another day of school, just might not make the different Boards of Education very happy or those who care about students getting a good education. Kentucky already is way behind academically compared to the rest of the USA, so I don't think the KHSAA would do something to make the matter even worse. Sports are for fun, but getting a great education is much more important to the majority of students.

Schools could schedule their spring breaks during the state tournament. Kids from all over the state are missing school to go watch the games even if their school is not in the tournament.

I agree. The only thing I'd change is MAYBE move the state title game to Sunday afternoon.

They should not change a thing, its the Kentucky State Tournament. The Greatest Show in Hoops. Everyone knows what it takes to get there, you have to be able to grind it out.

I understand it's all about the kids and the title sponsors but the halftime "entertainment" really wears thin by the end of the weekend. The National Guard, National Bank, and the Flavo-rich shirt shoot is completely boring!

They definitely need to change it up.

I think Warren Central was the last team to do it before that though. After that Warren Central, Apollo, and Ballard all lost from the bottom bracket.

I would have loved to see Central's band/cheerleaders/dance team perform at halftime of the championship game.
