State Tournament Format

How about starting the tourney on Tuesday instead of Wednesday. Semis on Friday evening and finals on Sunday evening?

How about starting on Tuesday with the Semis on Friday evening and the finals on Saturday evening? I don't see much reason to twiddle my thumbs all day Saturday waiting for the game to be played on Sunday and spending another night in the hotel. Your idea of starting on Tuesday is a good one. I don't see why that couldn't work and then people could catch up on the NCAA tournament and/or explore Lexington all day long Friday and Saturday before the night games, then get home to rest on Sunday before having to get back to work/school on Monday.

It's a marathon. Would the tournament have produced a different champion if

there was more time between games?

- Kids rest. Especially those without a deep bench would benefit.

- Coaches prepare. It was even more impressive that Central was able to execute Coach Bibby's game plan that well.

- More fans or less fans? I realize some come from far away in the state and like staying the entire weekend.

What if it was:

Thursday - opening round

Friday - opening round

Saturday - final 8

Following Week

Friday - Final Four

Saturday - Final Game

Everyone plays 2 games each weekend. The first half of the final game was really poorly played by both Central and Holmes because they were exhausted (and they should be).

Thoughts? Other formats?

Then you would have some people traveling two weekends - consider those who like to watch and those who follow the winning teams.

Also, would you do the same for the Girls Sweet 16?

Suddenly we have 4 weekends of basketball - pretty costly for most families

Ignoring the cost of renting Diddle and Rupp - you would have availability issues.

Interesting thought - don't think it will go over - probably just adding fuel to the fire that it needs to stay the same instead of change to classes.

I understand it's all about the kids and the title sponsors but the halftime "entertainment" really wears thin by the end of the weekend. The National Guard, National Bank, and the Flavo-rich shirt shoot is completely boring!

At the very least, they should consider changing the scheduled times of the games. For example, the 1:30 game on Friday didn't start until after 2:30, because of all the awards presentations at halftime, during the game and between games. There were similar delays in a lot of the games scheduled for 1:30 and 8:00. Maybe a change in the schedule for 12:00, 2:00, 6:00 and 8:00 gametimes. Thoughts?

I like it the way it is.

I've thought about this and I can't really see any way to change it for the better.

Personally, I like the way they play the semi-finals and finals on the same day. I like the finals being played on Saturday night.

The only possible change would be to start the tournament a day earlier, IMO. That way you could play the semis on Friday night and the finals on Saturday night. I do not like the idea of playing the finals on Sunday.

I think they should change

:thumb: I like this format. We always go down on Tuesday anyway so this would be so much better. It would also mean more money with an extra day and the the attendance would be better with the semifinals on Friday night rather than Saturday morning.

Keep it exactly how it is, not broke, don't fix it.:thumb:

Guys, part of the reason for the 4-day format is the KHSAA would rather not have to pay another day's rent for Rupp Arena.

My guess is that it is a lot more than that. There was a legislative led group that studied this not more than 10 years ago with interesting conclusions.

At that point, in 30 years, exactly 1/2 of the winners had come from thursday first round games, and 1/2 from wednesday, so it made no competitive difference.

The cost of the arena is minimal from what they found. however, the cost to the fans for another night of premium rate housing, and the cost of team travel for additional days were significant factors.

In all reality, you would increase the costs of running both tournaments by 25%, simply by going from four days to five.

IMHO, if there were ever any kind of change (which I hope there is not), it would be to have some sort of game randomly drawn between region and state so that you could bring 8 boys and 8 girls teams to Rupp Arena for a Sweet Sixteen and use only one school week.

Geez, we bring this stuff up every year. Keep it the way it is. It's not going to change.

Change it please!!! Playing two games in one day for the state championship is insane. Make it a five day tournament and start it on Tuesday.

Just because people say, "It's tradition, don't change it", is not a good reason to keep it the way it is. The body needs more rest. Holmes players were cramping during championship game, thankfully, their team was able to hold on and win and the fatigue was not a factor in determining the state champion. Those that said Holmes may have won last year as well may not realze that Holmes had more rest time than Mason, as Mason played the 2nd game, although Holmes' semi-final opponent was much tougher. Championship game should be moved to Sunday afternoon, semi finals on Sat night. It has worked well with Class A, I think Sat night crowd and Sun afternoon crowds would be HUGE, and people will see a much better game played for the championship.

How do AAU teams survive playing all those games in weekend tournaments?

Playing two games in one day is not a problem. Keep it the same.
