Lack of arm strength + floating passes = 6-6.

Hartline can't make the throws required. Unless they are going to start running the Bill Walsh west coast offense (like Joe Montana did) arm strength IS a factor and IS important.

Agreed. If you don't have a qb who can at least present the threat of the deep ball, SEC defense will bring the free safety and creep the lbs up even closer to the line of scrimmage. A nightmare scenario for any offense.

That said, if Hartline can hit a few deep balls, he does have the intangible of a SEC season under his belt. The importance of that can't be overstated. I remember when Pookie Jones (I'm showing my age) gave up his senior year to concentrate on baseball, just killed the Cats as they had to break in an inexperienced qb.

To me arm strength can be somewhat overrated. Sure it is nice but you can win big without it. Look at Matt Leinart or Ken Dorsey, they both won big, and though they didn't play in the SEC I think they would have done fine in that league as well. Even without the playmakers on all sides these QB's made smart decisions and played with poise.

Arm strength is just another tool that will make a QB better all around. Can you survive without it? Yes, with good play calling. Thats my 2 cents. I don't know if Hartline is the man at QB, but I think he will be much improved. Also, though, maybe I should watch closer because nothing Hartline has done has made me think that he, at any time, was better than any year Woodson was here. (well maybe Woodson's RS Frosh year)

Hartline made better decisions than Woodson if you compare their first year as a starter. Woodson had/has a far superior arm, no doubt. Andre may throw the tightest spiral I have ever seen. But if you talk about decision making, Hartline is ahead of where Woodson was at this stage. If you compare Hartline now to Andre's final 2 years at UK, sure, no comparison. But look at where they were at this stage of their careers at UK.

On the arm strength, it is a big tool, but there have been plenty of big armed QBs who could not make the grade due to their decision making (Jeff George immediately comes to mind).

Newton may be the best combination (talent wise) of decision making and arm strength, ... we will just have to see how he adjusts to the speed of the college game in the SEC. That will take time.

Just out of curiosity, why is everyone under the impression that Morgan Newton has tremendous arm strength?

Im guessing its wishful thinking due to the lack of a deep ball by Hartline.

I saw him play and I thought he had very good arm strength for a high school player.

At least he actually has muscles. Hartlines biceps look like my Mom's.

I think you have to go with one of the freshman and move Cobb back to receiver. Using Cobb at receiver gives another playmaker on the field, something that we lacked last year.

It has already been said by Brooks that Cobb is a w/r. Actually the best w/r. I do not believe Mossakowski will be ready coming off surgery.

But they will still have the Wildcat package with Cobb at QB for a series or 2.

I really like the possibilities this gives the Cats. :thumb:

Cobb has to take some snaps!!! JMO.

This kid can be one of the top playmakers in the SEC!!!!

I think Hartline will be the starter in the opener, but I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to get Newton (or whoever is the #2) some real game snaps. Then, they might take over at some point during the season.

Good possibility. The sooner the better. :thumb:

Ryan Mossakowski may be able to compete for the job right away based on what I have heard as recently as tonight. I was concerned about coming off of his shoulder surgery that he may not be at 100%. However, a relative of mine ran into Ryan's father at a conference in California last week and they talked for about 15-20 minutes. Ryan's dad said the surgery was a complete success and he is throwing the ball right now as well if not better and stronger than before the surgery.

2 top notch HS QB's coming in with a returning starter at the helm should drive them all to be better. Hartline is hearing the word on the street that his time as the QB could be limited with this talent coming in giving him even more incentive to prove himself & you have 2 young guns wanting to prove they belong under center in the SEC. This is a good thing in the long run IMHO.

Fidler looked alot better than Hartline today. Fidler ran over a safety today.

The light just dont seem to be clicking for Hartline. JMO

I think it will be Newton, but it wouldn't surprise me if Hartline was the starter for a few games.
