No chance for Cobb?

 

Unless the two incoming freshmen are total flops I don't think we'll ever see Cobb as the regular qb again. They might have packages for him but he won't be THE qb nor should he.

I would envision him in some all-purpose role. Catching passes out of the backfield, screens, wide-reciever pass plays, who knows what all they could do with him if they wanted. Just a guess.

QB by commitee IMO. Hartline will be the starter early, but I think atleast for the first few games Cobb will spell him in spots for a change of pace because he is such a tough matchup, maybe in a wildcat type roll, but I think in more of the kind of role he was last year. I think Newton will eventually get alot of playing time near the end of the season if he learns the playbook. If he is lights out near the end of the season, or if Hartline struggles he may take over near game 10 or 11.

Why unfortunately? He finished strong and the real issue on offense was the lack of WRs who could catch the ball.

 

He looked better than Woodson did early in his career. Not saying he is on the same level as Andre, but I am okay with him starting. He will have a tough time hanging onto it if Newton plays as well as I think he capable of playing.

Hartline finished strong in the bowl game and honestly, ... a lot of UK's offensive problems stemmed from dropped passes. When Lyons got hurt, the best WR was the other QB Cobb.

 

Hartline didn't look any shakier than Woodson his first year as a starter.

 

I do agree that if he struggles, we could see Newton.

 

I agree, he finished strong and will be the starter going into the fall. Word is that Mossakawski will redshirt, Cobb will be the go to WR, and Newton will have time to develop as the backup.

If you mean "one game" when you say "finished strong" I might agree with you despite the level of competition and throwing for 204 yards.

I agree and I have heard some talk of redshirting Mossakowski. I think UK should also run the wildcat formation with Cobb some but IMO Cobb should go back to WR

Not saying that Hartline will be Joe Cool, ... he obviously will not. But it isn't just about arm strength, .. it also is about decision making and more often that not, Hartline made the right decision. And he makes better decisions at this stage of his career than Woodson did. That is what I gathered from watching every game Andre played at UK as well as Hartline. Not saying he will be the next Andre Woodson, he won't. But I saw more drops than truly bad passes (even though there were several of those). Right now he is the man under center unless he is beaten out. I think Newton has the best shot at that, and it could happen this fall. But I am okay with Hartline being under center. I think he will be much improved this fall. Remember, this past year was his first year as a starter, and after Woodson's first year as a starter, he had all but lost his job but fought to get it back.

I'm Hartline will start the year off, but Newton should be the QB in no time.

I have to agree on this. :thumb:

I think alot of Hartline making the right decision was more of fear of making a mistake. That is natural for a young QB. I think most are either fearless gunslingers who are brought down to earth by seasoned defensive backs or timid, dink and dunk passers who might not make the plays but don't make plays that lose the game either.

I will say this though. Everytime I watched Andre Woodson play, I thought he would be a great quarterback for us. I don't know what it was, because his play often times wasn't great. I just knew that he would be a good one though. I don't have that feeling with Hartline. I do think he could remain the starter at UK, and certainly not do a bad job, but I think eventually he won't make enough plays and Newton will take over. I feel this way because at UK, we don't have the luxury of an LSU or Ohio State have had in the past of a "game manager" at QB to not lose the games. For UK to take the next step and compete for an SEC East title, they will need some star-power at QB, because though our talent level is very good, it pales in comparison to UF, LSU, Bama, and Tennessee atleast.

Agreed. If you don't have a qb who can at least present the threat of the deep ball, SEC defense will bring the free safety and creep the lbs up even closer to the line of scrimmage. A nightmare scenario for any offense.

 

That said, if Hartline can hit a few deep balls, he does have the intangible of a SEC season under his belt. The importance of that can't be overstated. I remember when Pookie Jones (I'm showing my age) gave up his senior year to concentrate on baseball, just killed the Cats as they had to break in an inexperienced qb.
