Which is difficult to get, expensive and requires all sorts of checks. Now semi-automatic guns that look like those are legal but they are no more powerful than an average hunting rifle and are actually poor hunting weapons because they do not have the stopping power of a 30.06 or a .308. The 5.56mm (or .223) round of an AR is actually less dangerous and has less range than the two rounds I mentioned above.

I would say the max range for a .223 would be about 500-600 yards and even then it would take some serious skills to make clean shots. So you won't find anyone taking 900 yard shots with a M16 anytime soon.

Ok... so the question reigns further. If they are not as powerfull as hunting weapons why are you guys so for having them? It doesn't appear they are going to be the ideal defense weapon either?

1. Banning automatic firearms are not going to keep them from being illegally acquired.

2. If criminals have automatic firearms, then the citizenry needs to have them, too. You can't win a gunfight with a knife, and I'm not going to rely upon a civil police force to defend me in a pinch.

Do they benefit society? They are as beneficial as NASCAR to America. Both are for enjoyment and recreation.

No one said they don't make good hunting weapons. You are also wrong that they don't make ideal defense weapons. Both of those aside, is hunting and defense the only two purposes guns have? Maybe people like to shoot them for enjoyment or hobby. Many use them in competitions.
