No one said they don't make good hunting weapons. You are also wrong that they don't make ideal defense weapons. Both of those aside, is hunting and defense the only two purposes guns have? Maybe people like to shoot them for enjoyment or hobby. Many use them in competitions.

 

I don't know many people who use an assault rifle for personal home defense. Most instances in your home would be close range combat. Your going to be much better off with a shotgun or a decent sized caliber hand gun.

 

I understand some of you want to be able to collect them and take them out to the range occasionally I guess you just have to purchase them pre ban.

That's why they have hollow points which you can put in your hand gun.

 

 

I am sure those will be outlawed at some point soon, I know the anti-gun lobby has serious issues with a bullet designed to do even MORE damage to a soft target.

Most don't but they are gaining popularity for just that. A 35" carbine makes a very good close quarters defense weapon and will get the job done a lot better then most any hand gun round you can buy.

 

Why should anyone have to buy them pre ban? Why should they be banned?

Can you hit a target with your shotgun from a half mile away?

Sometimes when protecting your house you don't want the bullet to go through the perp, the wall and into someone else.

 

Actually a .223 will lose it's velocity when hitting an object faster than a .38, .357, .45 or a 9mm. All are popular handguns loads. A .223 is usually 55 grs a .45 can typically be 230 grs. More mass = more energy. A .223 is designed to tumble when hitting an object therfore losing velocity rapidly.

 

An AR15 is an excellent home defense weapon. I have shot all kinds of firearms in my life. When I go to the range I always take my AR's. They absolutely the most fun to shoot.

We live in a day and age where terrorism is apart of our daily lives. School shootings are becoming trends. I have been to NYC during a time when some crypto agent deciphered a possible threat on the internet and all of NY's finest are walking the streets with M4's. It's a weird feeling to feel like your walking in a combat zone, pyschological or not. I know you will say well nothing major has happened yet, but if you can prevent something from happening why not? The only point I have heard from the pro assault people is to collect them and occasionally take them to the range. I just don't think the risk is worth the reward. I am a pro gun person I own guns. I just think military style weapons are better suited for the military. Just my 2 cents. I know nobody want the gov't to tell them what to do.

But banning these weapons will not stop a terrorist from getting his/her hands on worse weapons then a semi-auto AR15. When will people get it through their heads that criminals don't obey the law.

I understand your concern, however I really don't think semi-auto weapons that will up in the ban are what you need to be concerned about with terrorists. It's really not their M.O. They want to make as big of a splash as they can, do as much damage as possible while killing as large a number of people as possible. Semi-auto's isn't what they'll use, bombs would be the likely weapon of choice.

The school scenario is something that can happen with any gun, I can't see an "assault weapons" ban having an effect one way or the other on that.

Looks is what scares people. I can take a Ruger 10/22 which is just a .22 rimfire. Your basic squirrel rifle. Add an aftermarket stock slap an extended magazine in it and it'll look meaner than your military M4. But it still operates like it did before. just your plain ol' little .22.

As I recall, the last time they instituted a ban they tried to eliminate the ability to put a bayonet on the end. The gun was acceptible if it still functioned the same way; it just couldn't have a bayonet lug on it.

 

I believe that was to stop all of the "drive-by bayonetings" that had been occurring....
