I was not at the other games you mentioned, I was at the Greenup/Russell game and the officiating was good in this game. Not everyone sees these games the same way, as I have said before, the officials are an easy target for the team that lost to blame someone other than there team. Not saying this is the case in the Ashland/RH game because I was not there, there are some bad officials and some good ones, some mentioned in this thread are good refs, but I agree some are not!! I just wanted to point out as a nuetral spectator in the GC/Russell game, I thought they done a good job.

 

I'm sure the officials did a good job at GC-Russell. I'll also bet the fouls and foul shots were fairly even and not remotely like what happened on Blazer Blvd. That does make a difference.

That's right one man, get onboard. This ship is setting sail for the regional tournament. Captained by none other than Grecian Formula! Big Maroon sails blowing full in the wind at 37 knots with all the other boats traveling at 10 knots. Don't need any deckhands, all the efforts will be handled by Ashland Sporting Goods. Don't worry about if the boat will float, that boat was tested last year in the gym when it was full of water.

I was not at this game, however, in general, many of us graybeards in the region of known for years that particular official should just put on a maroon jersey when the game started to aviod him being mistaken for a referee.

I've observed him in many games not involving Ashland over the years and he is no better or worse than many others in the 16th region. However, when he gets the opportunity to call Ashland's games, it is a wholly different story. I also think he now has a very hard time keeping up with the pace of the game.

Scott played his heart out and deserves all tourney IMO. Good luck in the future. I think Scott can play college some where with his size as a guard and his shooting ability. Many seniors see this as the end but it is only the beginning of the journey.

If you have been around this region long you know what you are going to get with Bobby. He calls the obvious ones and trys to let the boys play and that is the way that it should be. I wasn't at the game last night so I don't know anything that happened but I do know that Bobby Kouns is the same everytime out.

I think Kouns is a top notch official.

Congrats to Ashland and to their players and coaches. The Fairview - Ashland final should be a very competitive game. The Rose Hill boys worked hard the entire game. RH has some fine players. I was especially impressed with Terry, even more so because he is only a freshman. Ashland will miss Bonner at the end of the season. I really think that he has improved from just a football player playing basketball to a fine basketball player that had developed some good post moves.

 

It is obviously clear that some RH posters feel that the officiating was biased, unfair, etc... and that is to be expected in a rivalry game. I know that they are trying to support their boys and they feel that an injustice has been done. I can respect that. I'm sure that in the past Ashland fans have probably felt they have been "mistreated" by the refs, maybe even in a previous RH matchup. Until video and computers take out the human element of officiating, there will always be controversy. I think that many fans will regret this, since it will take away some interesting "water cooler" discussions the next day.

 

As a person with no dog in the fight, I think that this "officiating controversy" really just masks the resentment still held between Ashland and Rose Hill fans. Both sides seem to love jumping on any issue to slam the other side. As a bystander it is amusing, but I feel we are sending the wrong message to the kids. Yes, we all want to win, but good sportsmanship should be first and foremost. This is sorely lacking in the unhealthy Ashland / Rose Hill rivalry.

I haven't witnessed any poor sportsmanship. Not between players, fans, coaches. All good sports. If you're referring to this board and this thread, where is the poor sportsmanship? Sportsmanship is between the players, fans, and schools. I haven't seen any of that sort here. Some feel that they were hosed by officials, how is that being poor sportsmen?

I agree that Scott Gambill is a class act! He was definitely under utilized by RH this year. Possibly they would have had a better record than they did if they had played him more. I think they are a better team than the record reflects.

 

I agree that RH had an opportunity to win. They only lost by 4. How many foul shots of the 10 did they miss? Also, Mike Terry's 3 pointer that hit the side of the backboard could have put them back in it.

 

Sick of people blaming refs for teams losing. Terry only committed 1 foul and had 22 points. How do we account for that? They called Delaney, Johnson and Skaggs for the first 3 fouls in the game. Refs COULD have called Kyle Bush for carrying the ball nearly every time he touched it (which he did). Johnny Bush who did foul out with just a minute or so left committed at least 2 more than they called. He was on Delaney like a wet t-shirt.

 

Personally, I cringe everytime I see Mr. Kouns come in the door. He has been involved in some of Ashland's more controversial losses this year, but again, you can't blame refs for everything. Teams need to be able to score more points and that takes the refs OUT OF THE GAME!
