I doubt very seriously that Wilson stood over top of someone and talked trash, Coach Carr wouldn't let that happen and would probably have gotten another T for running on the floor to stop it if it did happen.

 

Could someone who was at the game let me know if Wilson played the rest of the game after trash talking because if he did play, then this didnt happen because Coach Carr wouldnt put up with it and would have sat him the rest of the night!

I wasn't at the game either, but from the sounds of it, atleast the second foul should have been a t or flagrant for taunting. I don't want to say the first one was because I know Smith isn't that type of kid to do that, but if someone fouls you hard, like stated in the paper, and then proceeds to stand over you and talk trash, something needs to be done. I'm sure Scott fans would have said the same thing had it happened to one of their players.

 

No one stood over anyone and talked trash when Lother hit the wall. Trash talking did occur when Lother and Wilson tangled on the sidelines but nothing that doesn't occur in most games.

 

Lother is a good player and brings a certain attitude to Highlands game. He is not going to back down. Smith is also a good player who is not going to back down. They both play hard every possession. What else would you want from your floor leaders?

 

I don't see anyone on here complaining about the most obvious "flagrant" type foul when Smith was clearly elbowed by the Highlands player underneath after the rebound.

 

Hard fouls, inadvertant elbows are part of hard nosed high school basketball as long as there is no malicious intent. I could do without the trash talking but that probably more of a generational thing.

 

Good post season type basketball. Highlands handled the poor officiating better than Scott. My only complaints would be spend the money on the third official, I don't think Highlands athletic department is strapped for cash. Whoever assigns for the Ninth Region why would you assign those two officials to a high profile game between two good teams?

You've complained about this for the past 2 years when it comes to Highlands. If Highlands was doing something illegal, the refs would call a foul. Until then, as you said, teams need to learn to adjust. If anything, MORE fouls should be called on Highlands, using your theory that they do this, because refs are well aware of their reputation defensively.

 

Highlands does a good job taking advantage of the fact that most inexperienced refs don't call it. They are by no means the only team who does it. I don't like seeing it from any player. I believe more fouls DO need to be called for hand checking and holding, regardless of who is doing it. The offense is SUPPOSED to have the advantage off the dribble. Holding nullifies that advantage. I do think teams need to adjust to the subjective calling of the rule, but I still don't have to like it.

For those of you who know Coach Carr if it would have warranted any other action against Wilson everyone in the gym would have known it.

I saw in an earlier post that Scott's Murray had 26 points, for such a strong defensive game that seems pretty impressive.

When Lother went up for the lay up, Smith fouled him in mid air but clearly went for the block. .

Doesn't pertain to this play but I saw in the UNC/Miami game where a violation was called when a Miami player swung his elbows in an attempt to clear out a UNC guard. No contact was made and no foul was called but a violation was called and UNC was awarded the ball. Game officials likened it to a travel where no personal foul is awarded but ball is given to the other team just like a travel.

 

Does contact have to be made for a personal foul to be called?

When they came down to the floor, Smith shoved Lother into the padding, 2 hands square in his back. I was there opposite the HHS bench 25 feet from the play with a perfect view.

Yes it is a violation if you swing elbows excessively. Foul would be called if there were contact during the excessive swinging.

I must have been sitting next to you because I knew this foul was going to happen when the ball was still at midcourt.The reporter was standing above the basket on the balcony and had a "birds"eye view of the foul and followup scuffle.

Does Carr yell at his players like that every game??? That is a little over the top for me.I mean he really doesn't stop yelling all game long.:idunno:

Yes it is a violation if you swing elbows excessively. Foul would be called if there were contact during the excessive swinging.

 

 

As usual, ATM is right on it and correct.

 

However, I can't tell you the last time I actually saw it called in a high school game.
