The blog by the reporter is 100% correct. Smith challenged Lother on the shot, there was contact, that's why the foul was called. When they came down to the floor, Smith shoved Lother into the padding, 2 hands square in his back. I was there opposite the HHS bench 25 feet from the play with a perfect view.

 

I wasn't there obviously so I can't say if you are right or wrong on what you saw.

 

However, if what you described would happen in a game it would be a technical foul and potentially be a flagrant foul.
