Looked like Ken Ellis and Bob Cole. How do they get that game? No wonder there was no control of the game. They're just after votes (b/c they don't get any) and Scott doesn't vote.

Congrats to the Birds and Coach Schlarman

This game was very entertaining to watch as a fan. Back and forth for most of the game until the untimely technical foul on coach Carr. Not really sure what his issue was at that point in the game except for the play of his kids. Perhaps he was trying to light a fire under them. Officiating was bad on both ends and did not favor one team over another. Scott was in the bonus before Highlands in the first half and would have been in the second half as well had they not started to foul in order to stop the clock. Very good game by Lother, Grubbs and Smith-Keller. Kowolonek and Watson with their usual steady performances at both ends of the floor. Dill and Gordon were big time factors in the fourth quarter when HHS began to pull away. Grote had an off night by his standards due to foul trouble, but I still contend that he is the straw that stirs the drink for this team.

Really liked how Scott played on the defensive end and coach Carr's intencity though some kids really did not respond well to him IMO. Half court offense is a little stagnant, but they can sure run the floor as was exhibited in the 3rd quarter. They will be a tough out in the 10th region tourney.

I think a few of the Scott fans complaining about the officiating need to see Coach Carr's comment:

"The referees didn't lose the game for us," Carr said. "We lost the game by losing our composure, and that starts at the top with me. (Highlands) handled the adversity better than we did."

Why is it any time someone plays Highlands and loses, they automatically blame it on the refs and say Highlands was allowed to play "too physical?" Everyone knows they play a physical style of in your face defense so why do we constantly complain about it? A few of the Boone fans did the same thing when they lost to Highlands earlier in the year as well.

Also, If we're going to talk about officiating going one side, why was a Technical or flagrant foul not called in either of these situations:

As Lother went in for a layup with 4:50 remaining, he was slammed into the padded wall by Scott point guard Kellen Smith.

...With 1:23 left, Lother was hacked by bulky forward Andrew Wilson, who proceeded to stand in front of Lother and start trash talking. Again, Lother walked calmly to the free-throw line and made both shots.

When Lother went up for the lay up, Smith fouled him in mid air but clearly went for the block. Nothing dirty at all, and I'm sure that many of you have seen Highlands gym, the wall is at most 5 or 6 feet from the baseline. So if there wasnt a wall he would have just fell like any other foul.

Didn't see it...know the gym well...one can go for the ball and still body blast someone needlessly into said wall. Been there, done that!...had it done, too!

I remember Bill Keiper (sp) hit that wall head first at full speed. It knocked him out and could have been much worse. I wonder why they just don't tear out that mezzanine and extend the length of the floor?

Sounds like this game was very very physical to say the least but only two officials for two top ranked teams in NKY and those guys? :ohbrother:

And it sounds like not just the Scott faithful is complaining about the refs being a reason and not calling a fair game, but the Highlands fans are complaining that the foul was too hard and should have been a flagrant. Now i wasn't at the game but this to me is sounding like Highlands is complaining about Scott being to physical?

I wasn't at the game either, but from the sounds of it, atleast the second foul should have been a t or flagrant for taunting. I don't want to say the first one was because I know Smith isn't that type of kid to do that, but if someone fouls you hard, like stated in the paper, and then proceeds to stand over you and talk trash, something needs to be done. I'm sure Scott fans would have said the same thing had it happened to one of their players.

I thought I read somewhere that remodeling or rebuilding the gym was part of the plan when the school was finished. Is that not the case?

I doubt very seriously that Wilson stood over top of someone and talked trash, Coach Carr wouldn't let that happen and would probably have gotten another T for running on the floor to stop it if it did happen.

Could someone who was at the game let me know if Wilson played the rest of the game after trash talking because if he did play, then this didnt happen because Coach Carr wouldnt put up with it and would have sat him the rest of the night!

If the refs allow it, the other team has to adjust. Hand checking and holding may be physical defense, but they are fouls if they are called properly. You can't impede the progress of a player by holding them with your hands, putting your elbow/forearm in their gut, etc. This is part of why the finesse has been taken out of basketball and pure shooters have a tougher time scoring than they used to, because refs refuse to call it. It is a different game now. I watched a replay of the NCAA finals of Michigan vs. Indian from 20+ years ago, and everybody guarded by staying in front of their man and moving their feet. There was no holding and hand checking on the perimeter whatsoever. This type of physical defense can often help a lesser team compete with a better team. Very ugly type of basketball to watch.

You've complained about this for the past 2 years when it comes to Highlands. If Highlands was doing something illegal, the refs would call a foul. Until then, as you said, teams need to learn to adjust. If anything, MORE fouls should be called on Highlands, using your theory that they do this, because refs are well aware of their reputation defensively.
