February 18, 200917 yr He was a major reason for the misery that was the Cincinnati Reds in the 2000's. No, he didn't want to be injured and no he didn't want to see his skills deteriorate so rapidly, but the fact of the matter is that his salary and lack of play was huge reason we haven't seen a winning season in Cincinnati in forever. Just once before my son leaves for college next year I would have liked to have had the opportunity to closely follow an exciting Red's pennant race like I did with my dad growing up and that ain't gonna happen. If MLB had a salary cap there would be a better chance. He came here for below market value at the time, but it isn't his fault that the rules aren't competetive.
February 18, 200917 yr Well, "hate" in the sense that I don't like him as a player or what he did IMO to the Reds. I obviously don't "hate" him as a person, as I've never met the man. You hate him as a player because the Reds sucked when he was there? So do you also hate everyone else that played for the Reds during that time period?
February 18, 200917 yr Don't know how anyone can hate Griffey...It's not official yet anyway. Im a huge Braves fan, and I don't see how one could not be happy with the decision to sign Jr if it turns out to be true. Platoon in LF with Matt Diaz, only hit against right-handers, tutor younger outfielders on how to hit a baseball (Francouer, Heyward, Schaffer). I think it's wonderful to be a Braves fan today. I hate the Braves, but if Jr. signs there, they become my #2 team just behind the Sox...I think he'd be a great addition to almost any team at the right price of course. Ultimately, I think he'd be better off in the AL though.
February 18, 200917 yr One of my good friends is a big Braves fan all the way back to the early days of Braves baseball on TBS in the 80's. Hates Griffey...and is about ready to turn in foam Tomahawk. He must not be a real Braves fan if he is willing to stop liking them over the signing of one player. They're trying to be the best team they can be...how can any fan hate that?
February 18, 200917 yr You hate him as a player because the Reds sucked when he was there? So do you also hate everyone else that played for the Reds during that time period? No, mostly just him. He ate up the most money and we got very little in return. So I reserve most of my dislike specifically for him.
February 18, 200917 yr He must not be a real Braves fan if he is willing to stop liking them over the signing of one player. They're trying to be the best team they can be...how can any fan hate that? Seriously. Why in the world would he hate Griffey Jr. anyway?
February 18, 200917 yr No, mostly just him. He ate up the most money and we got very little in return. So I reserve most of my dislike specifically for him. You must really hate Barry Larkin then. His contract was much more damaging to the Reds than Jr.'s was.

Ultimately, I think he'd be better off in the AL though. I hate the Braves also but I may find myself buying a Braves hat. I got a White Sox hat when he was traded last year.
February 19, 200917 yr Jr is my favorite player and Braves are my favorite team so its a win-win for me:clap: :dancingpa
February 19, 200917 yr How could any Braves fan be upset with signing Griffey to a 1 year, $1.5 million deal? The Reds gave freaking Corey Patterson $3-freaking-million last year.
February 19, 200917 yr How could any Braves fan be upset with signing Griffey to a 1 year, $1.5 million deal? The Reds gave freaking Corey Patterson $3-freaking-million last year. And he earned every penny of it. Oh wait. I didn't see the "million" part of your sentence.
February 19, 200917 yr No, mostly just him. He ate up the most money and we got very little in return. So I reserve most of my dislike specifically for him. That makes zero sense. They overpaid for quite a few other guys....Barry Larkin, Eric Milton, etc. Why not the same hatred for them? Griffey was a class act on and off the field, the fact that some people dislike him because of things that were out of his control is truly sickening.
