I didn't think that Warren Central was that great. They got hot in the Finals against a very tired Mason Co. team. Truth be told, they were no much better than CovCath. Mason and Scott Co. played a double overtime game the game before. I thought that Marescka was underrated and Dewalt was overrated. He scored 4 pts in the Championship game and the big red head from CovCath gave him all he wanted in the semi's. Warren Central simply couldn't miss a 3 vs. Mason Co. If those teams played 7 times, it would be 4-3 Warren Central based on depth. They weren't outstanding in the sense of Scott Co.

 

Dewalt overrated?? :lol: The dude was a freak! Not only did he lead the WC basketball team to the State Championship, he also almost single handily beat St. X in the State Semi-Finals of Football.

 

I'm not so sure about the Cov. Cath. comment. Does anyone remember what Dewalts stats were in that game?

 

As far as Mason County goes... Wes Jones or no Wes Jones... There was no denying Warren Central that night or any other night for that matter. After Warren Central's basketball players got back and adjusted from Football, they went undefeated.

 

Everyone has their opinion though and that's cool. I just feel differently about the '04 Dub-C.

I'll go ahead and be the homer and say the '03-04 Warren Central Dragons. I am willing to say that however high anyone in the state could jump that year that Lonnell Dewalt could just 6 inches higher. The talent on that team was unreal!

 

Mason Co would have beat them if Wes Jones was playing.

1999 Ballard

1999 Scott County (only two losses to Ballard..but also beat them twice)

2007 Scott County

Its the 06-07 Scott County Cardinals. All they did was go undefeated against state competition, something that had not been done in 30 or 35 years. They also beat the #1 team in the country (Huntington High), a team that had Patrick Paterson and OJ Mayo on that team. This team not only is the best the last 10 years but have to be considered one of the best of all time.

 

I agree they are def. considered 1 of the best teams to ever play in the state of Kentucky.

Darius Miller was playing as an 8th grader on the '04 team. Wes Jones was on the '03 team and was kicked off of the '04 team, from what I remember.

 

Wes Jones was a D-1 player that was very athletic. IMO was on more college radars than Chris Lofton (who ended up as 1 of the best shooters ever in college). With Wes on that team i beleive Mason would win without a doubt. Not taking anything away from WC as they were impressive i just don't see them as the best team in the last 10 years.

He was very athletic, but he didn't impress me beyond that. He was their 4th best player in the 2 games I watched.

Worm was 5/5 from the field, had 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocked shots, and was 6/7 from the line for a total of 16 points.

 

In the championship game Worm was 2/4 from the field (what no one remembers or cares about it seems is that he only SHOT 4 times - they only look at the points), was 1/4 from FT, but had 16 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 blocked shots.

 

Worm was the most unselfish player I've ever seen. I saw games where he took over at will. If you've watched the video, you've seen snippets of some of the games he did. But he was always willing to defer the scoring role to his teammates and do the stuff no one else did. The guy had 16 rebounds in the championship game. Sixteen. He altered shots, even when he didn't block them. He was the focal point of the press, and though rarely credited with a steal, was a direct cause in many of them. You don't have to score all the points to be a dominant force on the floor.

With Wes on that team i beleive Mason would win without a doubt. Not taking anything away from WC as they were impressive i just don't see them as the best team in the last 10 years.

 

It's tragic to me that after all these years I still have to read this crap on here. What's worse, is that you guys don't leave any doubt. It's "would have" and "would win without a doubt". But at least the Wes Jones excuse is better than the OT crap I have to read about in that, and people noting a tired Mason County team. As I already pointed out, Central was the one that was in the undesirable slot, playing at the end of every day. Mason County had two full days rest after their first game. They had nearly 24 hours after their second, and they played the first game in the morning, meaning that while it went to OT (one OT by the way, not the two some are saying on here), what that meant is that when Warren Central played after them they had even LESS time to get ready for the night game. Mason County played 5 minutes longer Saturday morning. Boo hoo. They had a 2 hour head start on Central to get rested because the Dragons were still playing after them. How does that equate to them being more tired? And really, if the Royals were that great, why did they get pushed to 3 OTs by Trinity? Is there any doubt that any team besides Mason County and Trinity was to blame for them being tired after that game?

 

Like I said, I'm not trying to sell that Central was the best team of the last 10 years. I don't believe it, but I don't think they were as "not great" as some on here have somehow come to the conclusion they were.

 

And all these years later I wish Wes Jones hadn't been a moron and gotten himself thrown off the team before that tournament. That way I wouldn't have had to hear the excuses for 5 years that Mason would've won with him.

Fatigue may have played a role, but that's the nature of the tournament. What I am simply pointing out is that while Mason County played some tough games, it was their inability to win in regulation that put them behind the 8 ball. Central played two tough teams too in Apollo and CovCath, but throttled Apollo and managed to beat CovCath in regulation. Mason County played a single overtime period on Saturday morning. Warren Central played an entire game after that. I think that most coaches would have flipped that Saturday morning situation in a heartbeat.

That Warren Central team was pretty good. I think they were the best, but that may just be because I thought they were so fun to watch. The Scott team or the Lex Cath State Championship team may have been better.

It's very easy to say something would've happend but it didn't. Again, I think with or without Wes Jones, Warren Central still would've won.

 

As far as Overtime goes... Dragonfire practically took the words out of my mouth. If your the best team in the state you win in regulation. Warren Central never needed regulation. Enough said.
