That "big red head" just so happens to be playing Division 1 basketball and is the 3rd leading scorer on his team.

 

I understand that. He is playing Ivy league basketball, which is great for him. My point is that DeWalt was a great football player, a great athlete, and an above-average basketball player, not the great player everyone makes him out to be.

Dewalt would've shut him down without a doubt.

 

It's very easy to say something would've happend but it didn't. Again, I think with or without Wes Jones, Warren Central still would've won.

 

As far as Overtime goes... Dragonfire practically took the words out of my mouth. If your the best team in the state you win in regulation. Warren Central never needed regulation. Enough said.

They lost 7 games that year. The last game they lost was Jan. 17th, '04 against Fern Creek in Louisville. After the football players started getting back into Basketball shape they really blew it wide open.

I'd say the '99 and '07 Ballard and Scott County teams and add '03 Mason County and '04 Warren Central. As a homer I really liked the '05 Ballard team, they probably had more talent than the '07 team they just didn't have the desire (and Spillman walked).

 

But the thing about the two '07 teams and especially SC is that it was a two horse race all year. Neither team lost to anyone ranked behind them and Ballard's only loss going into the Championship game was in the season opener. I think that SC team will go down as perhaps the greatest but I think Ballard should be on the list because it won the KOB and LIT in addition to losing to only the top ranked Cardinals in state. None of the other years in the last 10 years had two teams like that, let alone in the same year.

Your right about the two horse race. I remember how great it was when I saw 11th and 7th on different sides of the bracket, knowing for sure the two best teams would be playing for the title in '07.

The '99 team for Ballard and Scott County were absolutely incredible, both teams being nationally ranked. They basically only lost to each other, they weren't even on each others schedule and managed to meet each other 4 times that year in tournies with of course the biggest of all being meeting in the City of Palms title game which featured a 16 team field with 5 nationally ranked teams that didn't include Ballard being ranked at the time.

Before Scott County lost that championship game to Ballard they were ranked #4 in the USA Today Super 25. There were great players on both teams too. Ballard had Bender and Chiles and Scott Co. had Rick Jones and Scott Hundley. I'm not sure what happened to Bender, but those other three players signed to play in the SEC.

Bender went to U of L. I think he mighta lasted his first year but I cant remember correctly. And dryz I agree that 06-07 wasn't the only year that there were two great teams like that, but it was the only year where you saw a #1 and a #2 stay that way the entire year and have the #1 go undefeated in State and the #2 team only lose in state to the #1 team. That's what I was mainly referring to. It was purely a two horse race.

It's tragic to me that after all these years I still have to read this crap on here. What's worse, is that you guys don't leave any doubt. It's "would have" and "would win without a doubt". But at least the Wes Jones excuse is better than the OT crap I have to read about in that, and people noting a tired Mason County team. As I already pointed out, Central was the one that was in the undesirable slot, playing at the end of every day. Mason County had two full days rest after their first game. They had nearly 24 hours after their second, and they played the first game in the morning, meaning that while it went to OT (one OT by the way, not the two some are saying on here), what that meant is that when Warren Central played after them they had even LESS time to get ready for the night game. Mason County played 5 minutes longer Saturday morning. Boo hoo. They had a 2 hour head start on Central to get rested because the Dragons were still playing after them. How does that equate to them being more tired? And really, if the Royals were that great, why did they get pushed to 3 OTs by Trinity? Is there any doubt that any team besides Mason County and Trinity was to blame for them being tired after that game?

 

Like I said, I'm not trying to sell that Central was the best team of the last 10 years. I don't believe it, but I don't think they were as "not great" as some on here have somehow come to the conclusion they were.

 

And all these years later I wish Wes Jones hadn't been a moron and gotten himself thrown off the team before that tournament. That way I wouldn't have had to hear the excuses for 5 years that Mason would've won with him.

 

My statement was a little over the edge. They wouldn't of won without a doubt I just beleive he would of made a difference. I just wanted to let people know that Wes was a D-1 prospect. I agree with you he was a moron by getting thrown off the team.

I agree that the 1979 Lafayette team was loaded. I had the pleasure of watching them play Holy Cross at Holy Cross that year. The first play of the game was a Wilson tip to Minnifield for a tomahawk dunk.

 

They did lose only one game and that was in the district finals to Lex. Tates Creek.

 

I couldn't remember who it was who knocked them off...and obviously, it was in the district finals, not the district first round as I inadvertently said.

 

Absolutely awesome team with no apparent weaknesses.
