Cameraman Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I apoligize if a similar thread is already up... I don't read this forum as much as I should. I'll go ahead and be the homer and say the '03-04 Warren Central Dragons. I am willing to say that however high anyone in the state could jump that year that Lonnell Dewalt could just 6 inches higher. The talent on that team was unreal!

Its the 06-07 Scott County Cardinals. All they did was go undefeated against state competition, something that had not been done in 30 or 35 years. They also beat the #1 team in the country (Huntington High), a team that had Patrick Paterson and OJ Mayo on that team. This team not only is the best the last 10 years but have to be considered one of the best of all time.

Don't know about best of all time but they had some really nice players on that team with Mackey, Walls and Portwood. BTW, did Mackey ever end up playing in college. I know he had some personal issues but wasn't sure if he played at the next level or not.
kwl1977 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Don't know about best of all time but they had some really nice players on that team with Mackey, Walls and Portwood. Can you name a team that accomplished more?
ScarHeel Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Can you name a team that accomplished more? But no, I can not as I am not a Kentucky High School basketball historian but I'm sure if a team has accomplished more then there is a poster on this site who can comment on it. Just because I said, "Don't know about best of all time" does not mean they are not the best in the last 10 years. :thumb:
Cameraman Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 Can you name a team that accomplished more? Accomplished more? No. But how was competition that year? I'd like to see that team against the Russellvilles and Etowns of '99 and '00. I just don't see hardly anyone stopping the Tony Key's or Antwan Barbours.

I remember seeing that E'town team play, they were awesome. The Lafayette team that won state around that same time was so much fun to watch. My dad and I have always gone to the state tournament and that Lafeyette team with Robert Madison was always my favorite, well besides one other team.

Ballard ended the season as state runner up with only two losses, both against Scott County.Ballard also was ranked in the top 40 in the nation after the season was over. And no disrespect to Key and Barbour but I would take OJ Mayo against those two any day. Also Bud Mackey was ranked as one of the top 35 players in America that year. How would they stop him. Russellville lost six games and Etown lost five games that year. Once again Scott lost 2 games both to teams that were ranked in the USA Today top 25(Arlington County Day and Huntington in the rematch). No offense but it doesnt even look close comparing the three.

I remember that Scott County team that year as I was happy when HC was tied with them at half time and only lost by around 15.
dryz93 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Agreed the '07 Scott County team did something that hadn't been done in a very long time running the table with state competition. And that was a very talented Ballard team they beat in the finals. Also throw in the '08-'09 Scott County team who only had two losses and climbed to number 5 in the country after winning the city of palms, they lost both games to Ballard however after beating them twice that year too, and of course the one loss was for the state title. And of course that same Ballard team was nationally ranked too after the state title and were ranked nationally the following year.

And then didn't Huntington High beat them down when they played again? I'll agree with CameraMan, That Warren Central team was the best team of the last ten years IMO. Marescka (sp) and Dewalt were athletic as it got and so was their point-can't remember the name off the top of my head. Take a look at this:

He did not play when Huntington won in WV. That Warren Central team lost seven games that year. Once again I dont even think it is close.

Marescka (sp) and Dewalt were athletic as it got and so was their point-can't remember the name off the top of my head. Take a look at this: Matt Maresca (went on to play at WKU) & Lonnell Dewalt (went on to play football at UK) were the two big guys. Ryan Anderson was their PG, and I believe he was a 4-year starter. His little brother, Jeremy, was the 6th man & a freshman on that squad. The other two starters were Brock Whitney (Tourney MVP, if I remember correctly) and the other kids' name escapes me right now. DragonFire could help us out. Can you name a team that accomplished more? Warren Central accomplished more. They went to the state tournament something like 4 or 5 years in a row, and dominated the state tourney finals against Mason County (who was the defending champion, with Chris Lofton) in '04.
Log Mountain Boy Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 When we are talking about the last 10 years are we talking about the 98-99 season? If so the most talented team maybe Ballard in 99. No one has accomplished what Scott Co. did in 07. No team has went undefeated in Ky since the 40s I believe. And they beat Huntington with OJ Mayo and Patrick Patterson.
