I'll agree with CameraMan, That Warren Central team was the best team of the last ten years IMO. Marescka (sp) and Dewalt were athletic as it got and so was their point-can't remember the name off the top of my head.

I think I'd have gladly watched a matchup between that Central team and the 06/07 Scott County team. I think your "not even close" statement about a few teams in this thread is a complete joke. Did you even see any of those or are you simply going to Riherds and reading off their losses?

The big number to look at is zero. The number of losses Scott County had. Could Warren Central beat Scott Co.? Yes they could. But if you look at the resume of each team I dont think it is that close. Undefeated in state, something that had not been done in 30-40 years, and beating the #1 team in the nation has to mean something.

On another note its hard to argue against the 07 Scott County team, they were special. Also, I dont think you can really mention a Russellville team that didnt win a state title. Tony Key was a good player but without a state title how can you be mentioned in this discusion. I will say a team like the 07 Ballard team in any other year would be on this list but 07 was the year of Scott County. Scott County by far in this discussion.

'03 Team was deeper with Nathan Myrick, and Wes Jones. (Jones was suspended in '04 run) Also the '04 squad played a triple OT game against Trinity in the quaterfinals, and a double OT game against Scott Co. in the Semis. They were worn out by the time the championship game came around and lost by 10pts to Warren Central. (I'm not trying to say that Mason would have won if they didn't play those OT games earlier) But I think '03 was better than '04.

 

The problem with the OT argument is that they shouldn't have been taken to all those overtimes if they were the best team. Central played the late game on Thursday night, the late game on Friday night, the second game Saturday morning, and the championship. That means other than the initial game there wasn't a single opponent WC played that didn't have more rest with respect to their most recent game.

 

And I won't even touch the Wes Jones discussion.

I know this is not what Scott County did, as they did play competition, but if you wanted me to put together a schedule that would result in zero in-state losses for a team, I could probably do that.

In all seriousness, Warren Central, as you said, lost the majority of their games before they got Worm & Whitney back. Once they returned, they were a completely different team and with good reason.

 

Warren Central beat Covington Catholic in the state semis, who had just beaten one of the top teams in the state in PRP (who had 6'11'' signee Terrance Farley and one of the top players in the state in junior JuJuan Spillman...and D1 guard Jazz Neal). CCH only lost 4 games that year, 1 to Scott Co. @ Scott Co., Cincy St. X, Brossart & Warren Central).

 

Warren Central went on to handle the defending state champs in Mason County, who had Mr. Basketball Chris Lofton. Add that to the fact that WC had "been there, done that" for much of their high school careers, and I think you have a team that was completely geared for a tournament run.

What about the Male team that lost to Lafeyette(sp?)

If I was looking at the best all-time team...

 

1979 Lafayette Generals, coached by Jock Sutherland, would be my pick. Lost just one game all season - to Henry Clay, I believe - in the first round of the district, then pounded HC in the region finals.

 

Dirk Minnifield and Tony Wilson were two studs who not only were awesome on the HS level, they also excelled in Division 1 colleges (UK and WKU).

 

Game was a little different then - no three point shot - but, having seen both teams, I'd rank them ahead of the 07 Scott County Cardinals. They were incredibly athletic, could hurt you inside and out, and were very smart.

 

I do agree that the 07 Cardinals were probably the best KY team of the past decade, though...

 

 

I agree that the 1979 Lafayette team was loaded. I had the pleasure of watching them play Holy Cross at Holy Cross that year. The first play of the game was a Wilson tip to Minnifield for a tomahawk dunk.

 

They did lose only one game and that was in the district finals to Lex. Tates Creek.

I'd take '04 Warren Central over '03 Mason Co. Heck, Mason County had a very similar team in '04 and Warren Central handled them in the finals.

 

Also, wasn't the Lafayette team that won it all in '01? Lex Cath won it all in '02, with Demetrius Greene, William Graham & Harrison Morton as sophs. Brian Smith was a junior on that squad. Unfortunately for the Knights, those 3 sophs never made it back to the state tourney...

 

That Lex. Cath team was fun to watch. They were exciting. It was a shame when Greene tore his ACL in the region (I think) I can't remember what year. But they had a great shot at the title. If some Lex. fan could help me out here. Also, the 03 Mason Co. team. That was a fun team to watch as well lead by Lofton. The 04 team I believe would have won a second title if not for the suspension of Jones. Mason was hurt by the triple OT with Trinity and then they next game a double OT with a good Scott Co. team. But, that Warren Central team was explosive. Whittney was something else to watch in the finals. As for Dewalt, what else can you other than bunnies. I remember a put back dunk he had over Mason Co.'s Litzinger. Dewalt was at the top of the key, and exploded down the lane rose over top of Litzinger and flushed it with one hand. Simply amazing.

Another good "All Time Team" would be the 1963 and 1964 Seneca teams with Wes Unseld and Mike Redd. Both Unseld and Redd were named Mr. Basketball in their careers. Both were stars in college, Unseld an All American and later an All Pro.

 

I agree with the 1979 Lafayette team being great, but to add a comment on what someone else posted earlier about the other Lafaytte championship in 2001, that Lafayette team lost something like 11 games that season, and didn't even win their district if memory serves me right. I think their championship that year was a freak thing that happens ever so often in the state tournament. Male put on one of the biggest chokes in state tournament history that year imo.

I didn't think that Warren Central was that great. They got hot in the Finals against a very tired Mason Co. team. Truth be told, they were no much better than CovCath. Mason and Scott Co. played a double overtime game the game before. I thought that Marescka was underrated and Dewalt was overrated. He scored 4 pts in the Championship game and the big red head from CovCath gave him all he wanted in the semi's. Warren Central simply couldn't miss a 3 vs. Mason Co. If those teams played 7 times, it would be 4-3 Warren Central based on depth. They weren't outstanding in the sense of Scott Co.

Some of those dunks are very impressive for the high school level. They remind me a lot of Holmes of this year, athletically. I think Pittman has a little over 60 dunks so far.

 

I remember seeing that WC team against Covcath in the semi's and then in the finals in 04 though, and they were fun to watch.
