Something that I forgot to mention in my "distinguished portfolio piece", (thanks JC) is the fact that there is some real talent coming up from the eighth grade class that may have some impact next year and definitely will during their sophmore seasons in a year and half. Though their record didn't show it during this past fall (there were seven different kids in some sort of hard cast during some point of this past season), they were Salt River Conference Champs in the seventh grade. Rockcastle's primary problem isn't finding players it seems, but people to fill the shoes of the key players when that kid gets hurt. They need higher numbers and I think that Coach Parkey is working on that problem by putting more attention into the feeder program and youth football to encourage more participation. For example... Little League exhibition games a few times this past season on the high school field before a home varsity game to get the little guys excited about playing football.

That isn a good point papa, if the numbers were up not so many kids would have to go both ways. I know the kids are always in great shape but a little rest sure would make a difference.

What you said is what I meant in my earlier quote. They need to get the numbers and interest up in the program so that so many kids wouldn't have to go both ways and when a really good player gets hurt there isn't such a drop in talent. When I wrote that last piece that you are referring to, I had in mind the middle school program from this past season when the main ball carrier broke his leg in practice. He was replaced by the seventh grade running back which played a large part in the seventh grade season slide. Then, that boy broke his leg and neither middle school team had a real threat to be ball carrier. On top of these two accidents there was five more kids in hard casts this last season at the middle school level. I think Coach is really trying to increase interest in the feeder programs such as youth football and middle school to get numbers up at the high school level and hopefully increase the talent pool as well. Maybe then there will be less "iron man" football and capable replacements when the need arises.

I think that the Rock will improve on what they done last season. They should make a deeper run in the playoffs. They have one of the hardest working coaching staffs in the state of Kentucky. They have a very talented senior group along with some great juniors also. They have a few key spots that need to be filled, I know that they have the athletes to fill them. I think the Rock will right there competing with Bell for the district championship.

 

This will be an exciting season at the Rock!!!

I know History would tell us Bell, Rock , Knox will all be good. I feel like Madison So. and McCreary Central will both be very improved, don't be suprised if one of these knock off one of the Big 3".

You are correct they are not in that class yet. You don't make up for 50 point loses in 1 off-season. If anyone seen either of those teams they know that.

 

Rock should be improved but they still had a ways to go. They as always will be solid on defense but they must improve on offense. I predict they will have a hard time replacing the quality they lost in the HB position. He was a special player.

To me it is "THE" most competitive district in class 4A.

I can't predict the future but I know that last year MC gave Rock a very challenging game until Roark went out with an injury and at that Rock only won by 27. I think everyone has seen teams lose by that much one year and win by the same margin the next. I also know this is the most dedicated bunch of kids for MC and they will imrove 100%. Rock is one of the hardest working teams also in the off season in the weightroom lifting over 20 hours a week M-F, with conditioning included. They haven't won over 100 games in each of the past two decades either by overlooking people.

 

You say Rock only won by 27, do you realize that is 4 touchdowns and not too mention one of their best defensive players spilt his mouth wide open and had to have around 40 stitches after the game.

I agree with you 3wishes in that Rock is a great team that has always had a great program but sometime people involved with those programs forget that there are programs that develope into programs that become very good or even great. Yes, I realize that is 4 TD's and the year before Rock won 51-0 and the diference between the 2 years where MC scored 16 more and Rock scored 8 less is 24. That is only 3 points more to be made up. The way I see it is MC is working 10 time harder than they have ever worked in the off-season and only lost 5 players to graduation and none of them were skilled players. Rock lost around 10 to graduation and several of them were key positions on both sides of the ball. I am no way saying that Rock will be down because they always have a great team I am just saying to be successful in our district they need to continue working hard in the offseason and not over-look anyone. Football is a funny sport and the ball is not round which means in can bounce in any direction. I also wish Rock luck for the 2009 season except when they play McCreary!
