Should there be a Private school State championship Or Public State champioship also? It seems unfair to the schools that are in the middle not small enrollment or large enrollment to compete for a state championship.

Is it time to go to a class system? It can work and be more money for the KHSAA with proper planning! I know the Sweet 16 is sacred in kentucky and the cash cow of the KHSAA but it works for other states. I have watched the Ohio class state championships and it is as exciting and profitable as well.

You have a valid point but not sure, it would be more money for the KHSAA. How would you structure the format, 8 or 16 teams. If you choose either, than nearly impossible to secure the same venue for use. Then you would have to rent multiple arenas, for the events and staff accordingly.

 

It would help the hotel/motel business and local restaurants, but not sure the overall attendance for differing Classes, would sustain the costs.

You could set aside a week and weekend for them during the mid season. I would do this for all 6 classes.

I personally think you could keep it as is but if you are going to do a A and AA, may as well do them all.

This has been discussed many times over on this website. You are not going to see classification in basketball in Kentucky....period.

I was talking to two of my friends yesterday and one suggested to perhaps take the six class champions, and then have them play to determine an overall state champion. I don't know how you would determine who had first round byes, since there are six teams, but it is an interesting idea.

 

I completely disagree with "Class" Champions. There is no way to determine a true State Champion by doing this. Because some years, your Single A champion (i.e. Elliott County) may be better than any of the five other class champions, but you never know. It takes away from the stigma of winning a State title in Class systems IMO. Kentucky is not a big state land-wise, like California is, where it is almost impossible as well as illogical to have one tournament-but Kentucky's state tournament is just fine the way it is IMO.

BTW; what's so wrong with using Murray State and Northern Kentucky arenas? Both are bigger and newer than Eastern Kentucky or Morehead!

I really wasn't sure what kind of gyms they had. I'd add them in place of Rupp and Cheatum Hall.

I personally like this format, then at the end of season have the regular Sweet 16 at Rupp. It would be interesting to see how many teams make both trips.

I do feel a little torn about having class championships. It would be nice for the smaller schools to chance at a state title, it would put them on a more level field. The single A and AA schools have little chance against some of the powerhouses and the private schools.

 

Does anyone know who the last A or AA school to win the state?

 

However i do also like the sweet 16. I think its a great thing and a lot of fun and its a great honor for some of the small school just to make it there,and would be an Even bigger thrill to actually win the state title outright.

True state champion or not. If you're really a proponent of young people then you would have a class system. I've coached at both types of schools and understand the trials of both. I realize that it will always be negated by the KHSAA because of money. Money is what the entire state tournament is about for the KHSAA young people are second.

Polarbear your school has a chance at the All A so why shouldn't other schools that are just above the A level not have a chance to be champions also. I think if you had different class champions you would see less kids transferring across the state. Plus ask the Brossart Kids if their Class A championship is not a true state championship. Also Brossart uses this to their advantage of "come play for a championship."
