Jeff Kent

Is he a Hall of Famer? I think yes. Leads second basemen in career home runs and drove in over 90 RBIs for 7 straight years. He also won an MVP award. Further, and this should make him a unanimous Hall of Famer, he shoved Bonds and wanted to fight him.

Believe me, Jeff "Can't" wanted no part of Bonds. And since he rode Bonds' shirttails while in the Bay Area he is emphatically not A Hall Of Famer. Anyone who thinks Kent was a better teammate than Bonds is delusional.

Really? So you've obviously been in the clubhouse, and talked with the players to see which was a better teammate? And just because Bonds protected him in the lineup he doesn't deserve the HOF? Kent still had to be able to hit, and put up those numbers. Should Tony Perez and Johnny Bench have canceled each other out because they rode each others shirt tails?

I guess he is a HOF. To me he would get in on the last ballot. Remember though, my standards are really high to make the HOF.

1st Ballot: Say the name, Jeff Kent. That does not resognate with me as the likes of Ruth, Mays, etc. It amazes me many people (Gammons said so yesterday) that they believe he is a first ballot guy.

Kent, to me, was never any type of tranformational player or dynamic force. If you have to make one of those baseball type arguments such as, "Kent was one of the best ever at turning double plays and his OBP with runners in scoring position after the 6th inning is best in the modern era," he should be on the back end of HOF voting ballots.

I agree whole heartedly that he's not a first ballot HOF. I do feel he will get in by his 7th or 8th year of eligibility though.

However, Ryne Sandberg was? Kent did not ride the coattails of Bonds. It certainly helped, but you don't win an MVP by being an average player hitting behind a great one. Additionally, Kent's numbers for his position put him in offensively over any other second basemen of the past 30 years not named Joe Morgan.

Kent doesn't pass the "wow" test, but the man hit WAY more homers at the 2B position than anyone else.

It depends on your criteria. Was he a dominant player of his time? No. Was he a dominant player at his position? Sure was.

I see being a hitter as being a hitter. No matter what position you play. Your stats as a hitter are either great or not. No distinction of what position. Now, where position comes into play is with defense (i.e. Ozzie Smith). Was Kent a great defensive 2B? I think not...

I think Kent will make the hall.

I always thought he was one of the most overrated players in baseball. He was a nice hitter, but he got more credit for his offense because he played second base. He was one of the worst defensive second basemen I saw on a regular basis (when he was a Met I saw him quite a bit). He was okay, but he obviously wasn't one of my favorite players.
