Really shocked at the score. I've been predicting wrong against the Tigers often lately.

 

Saw them play a few times, but against DIII teams and CCH.

In all seriousness, I think once people see this team in person they realize that Beechwood is legit. Some can argue that Highlands is overrated, NKY is that wide open, Beechwood only beat this team or that team by this much, etc, but the bottom line is Beechwood beat one of the hottest teams in nky (outside of Holmes) tonight.

Coming around, but not sold.:ylsuper: Point guard play is a factor and theirs is inconsistent.

It's tough to put Beechwood in the top 5 because of their loss to Campbell Co but IMO it wouldn't surprise me if they did move in there somewhere.

Someone save me a small slice of the crow pie. Beechies record to date hadn't impressed me enough to think they were as strong as what Eta was claiming, but this game shows he was on target and I was simply building up an appetite for humble pie. Congrats to Beechies on a nice win!

Lol that's why I'm really glad I don't have to vote. There is no way to rank the teams cause they have all beaten each other. I honestly think I'd just have to go with who won this week against who, and even then it's still hard.

I agree 100%. What's going to be very fun though, is watching the 9th & 10th region tournaments at NKU. Curious to know if anyones heard of the format yet?

#2 thru #6 (Scott, Beech, HHS, Boone, Campbell) could each beat or be beaten by any of the others on any night of the week. They are all that close . . . . . right now.

Really? I didn't think they looked thaaat bad. They looked pretty much typical of what I've seen from them this year. They did the things they do well... well and they did the things they do poorly... poorly. I just thought Beechwood exploited weaknesses, and made a few key plays they really needed.

 

I don't think this game hurts Highlands much. They didn't play horrible, and they found some things out about themselves. Good one to learn from and make them better.

 

I think if you ask the coach for the Birds and the players individually they would all probably tell you it was a bad night. Too many turnovers and some standing around out of that zone defense when Beechwood shot. Always tougher to box out when your in a zone rather than man-man. I thought both teams seemed to turn it over right a lot and especially right after they would create a turnover.

 

How about when Grote has the ball out front and he starts sizing the defender up? That is a thing of beauty how he crosses over and takes his man down the lane. He squares those shoulders up and slices in there for a really nice drive and he either lays it off the glass or finger rolls it in. This is something Highlands struggled with as a team overall last night and that was creating shots for themselves. With Stephen K hardly touching the ball and when he did he was generally blanketed and the rest of the Birds not being able to create a solid shot I thought it attributed to the low point output. The only time I really saw someone create a good shot for themself was when Dill got the ball at the elbow and take his man all the way to the hoop for a layin. Grote was the only other player who seemed to get a decent shot off when he was being guarded. Just an observation. And credit should be given to the Beechwood players for exerting pretty good defense.

It certainly wasnt a convincing victory Chickenliver. Highlands almost won the game, Grote got a great look in regulation from 12 feet to win it and it was wide. Both teams could have won it in regulation and didnt to be honest. Buettel hits both his freebies and there is no OT probably.

 

Bottom line is Beechwood deserved the win and if Highlands would have won last night it would have been the biggest heist of a win within a 20 mile radius. It just wasnt meant to be. Its High School basketball and it happens.

 

Only other observation that surprised me a little was Beechwood's inability to consistently shoot the rock from the perimeter. Romes struggled as he had some nice open looks and Buettel as well. Pohlgeers hit one 3 ball I think and I dont remember him even getting off another one. The Birds were in a 3/2 zone for a lot of the 2nd half as well.

 

Also, if you want to talk about baskets that came back to haunt the Birds that probably had a play in preventing them from winning in regulation. How about the big bucket by Snyder at the end of the 3rd? Tigers inbound with 5 seconds left under their own basket and the Birds are in a zone. Snyder gets the ball on the right wing, dribbles right through the Highlands zone on his way to an easy 2 footer and the buzzer goes off. Too easy of a basket IMO and set the tone for the final qtr.

Beechwood could be a really good team if Beuttel and Romes play well and Smith and Snyder play the defense like they did tonight. Buettell at times got himself into bad situations which resulted in turnovers but for the most part played pretty well. Romes at times seemed to put the head down and force drives but he is a really nice player with some serious slashing moves. He has major ups as well. Smith played tough and with swagger in the lane. Snyder is a great leaper who blocked a couple shots, flew in high for some tap in's and passed the ball well. Pohlgeers hit a big 3 early in the game but he was somewhat silent tonight. I think they can definitely win the All A.

 

Coach Shumate is a great coach. In the 2 years he's been there he's produced some competitive teams. I wonder how long he'll stay at a football school.

Beechwood needs to work on free throws. I think for this team we can call them foul shots because they don't look free. They would have had a pretty good lead had they made their foul shots.
