Could be, but the best I can do is go back to about 75. In 78, Holmes was ranked in the top 3 all year, but I don't think they ever got to number 1. Their only two losses that year were a loss to Shelby County in the LIT and a loss to Shelby County in the state finals (Beal, Schloemer, goaltend, etc.) I think Shelby County went wire to wire that year.

 

I would think that other possible candidates for a #1 ranking would have been the Holy Cross team that got to the finals (64?), the CovCath team that lost in the state finals (67), Highlands team that lost in the finals with Smith and Lorenzen, or Holmes state finalist in 90. Simon Kenton in 1981 was definitely NOT ranked number 1 in the state before the state tournament.

 

Bottom line is I think that this year's Holmes team has already done something (held a #1 ranking for about a month) that no other team from No. Ky has EVER done. Any disputes?

You're thinking of the 05-06 CovCath team, but I don't think they were one of the favorites at the Sweet 16 that year. And Apollo ended up going to the finals after upsetting CovCath by 4 in the first round.

 

I think it was the 03/04 Covcath team that was favored to win it all. Lost in the semi's.

Regardless of whether or not Holmes wins the state title this year (which I'm hoping they do), they will go down as the greatest team to ever come out of the 9th or NKY IMO.

Agreed, at this point the state champion SK team would still be the best ever out of the 9th. Holmes has to seal the deal and win state.

I think the Sk team was very underated from what I remember. They were good but I dont think they were even a favorite to win the region, I beleive It was Highlands when they had Draud but im not positive. Sk just turned it on once they got to the tournament. Also I think back in 05 CovCath was favored to win the state tournament but lost in the first round to Apollo.

 

The year was 1981. Draud was not on that Highlands team, nor was Highlands favored to win the region.

I'd say that 03/04 Covcath team and this year's Holmes team would probably be the two best teams to come out of the 9th this decade. Not sure who I'd give the edge to. Covcath had a lot of size that year but didn't really have that "superstar" like Holmes has this year.

From what I remember, that Holy Cross team made only as high as #3 or#4.

That I think is fair. But I will tell you that 4 or 5 of Simon Kenton's key players played college sports, so don't sell them short. McKinley at UK, Meier played baseball at TMC, Dixon played college basketball (Berea?), Mullins played football at Western, Ponzer played football at Hanover. I believe I am right about those. Not sure about others. How many of Holmes' players will go on to college sports? That is a good indicator of talent.

I think Holmes starting 5 could all play college ball at certain levels.
