Elliott County Basketball

The Lions received some good press following the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach. Here is an article from a South Carolina newspaper:

The biggest boosts for ticket sales was the participation of Elliott County (Ky.), which brought more than 100 fans, and well-supported Pennsbury (Penn.), Rhodes said.

Tournament awards

Most Valuable Player | Michael Gilchrist, St. Patrick (N.J.)

Most Outstanding Player | Evan Faulkner, Elliott County (Ky.)

Individual Sportsmanship Award | Dalton Pepper, Pennsbury (Penn.)

Individual Hustle Award | Ethan Faulkner, Elliott County (Ky.)

Team Hustle Award | Elliott County (Ky.)

Team Sportsmanship Award | Pickering (Canada)

Danny Defensive Award | Dexter Strickland, St. Patrick (N.J.)

Congrats to the Lions on a good showing for the state of Kentucky :thumb:

That's impressive that they won 3 awards and also that they took over 100 people to Myrtle Beach for most of a week.

Nice gotta love when teams leave the state and rep well. Go Elliot Co.!

As I read about Elliott County, I think back to 1983 when Carlisle County(student enrollment 284) had their best team. During year they played the nations #1 team Baltimore Dunbar with Mugsy Boggs, and 2 other players that played pro ball. Dunbar won by 12 but was hard pressed to win.Carlisle was 40-4 and runner-up in the state tourney (Coach David Henley of Holmes was a starting guard on this team). As a long time fan of KY basketball I enjoy the great accomplishments of the small schools. All the luck to Elliott County.

I made the trip to MB and it seemed more like 300 fans. I am not good at guessing numbers. They were a loud bunch so it probably seemed like 300.

No other team had the fan support that EC had. Some teams didn't have anybody (or so it appeared). Maybe a few parents and that was it. Some of the locals wanted to know if anybody was left in town. I told them to come to Lexington if they make the State Tourney and you will be surprised how many fans they bring. Then you can truly ask the question--Anybody left in Sandy Hook??

Very simple.

1. They're threatened. speechless-smiley-013.gif

2. Elliott County's publicity means somene else isn't getting quite as much.

3. And don't hammer me here; just an observation. Some fans bring on the criticism themselves. Not just an EC thing, either.

PS - Congrats to Elliott County on the recognition!

Who is finding fault with Elliott County? I don't think there's a person on this site who isn't greatly impressed by what the school from little ole Sandy Hook, and this young men have been able to accomplish. Some may argue that their team is better, or they have a player who is better than an Elliott County player, but I don't think anyone in the state of Kentucky can honestly say that what this small school from E. Kentucky has been able to accomplish isn't impressive.

Congrats Elliott!! This positive press will draw more attention to you and the others following behind you, possibly opening doors and sparking interest for others in the county.

What an AWESOME legacy you all would have for generations to come. :ylsuper:

I remember that team very well. That team was coached by Craynor Slone. The job he did at Carlisle County earned him the job at Ashland the next year, my senior year.

If the season ended today it's still amazing what these young men have done. It isn't finished and I believe in miracles like the Milan story in 1954 (Hoosiers Movie) and the similarities are striking. Elliott is the Sea Biscuit (Great Movie by the way) of HS Basketball. This amazing story is what compels & motivates me to Sandy Hook night after night with 5 hours of driving (round trip).

All the coverage & verbage they gather on here just fuels the passion.

Wow that is very impressive. I'm most impressed with the team award :) Congrats!
