Dave Weston out at Holy Cross

Featured Replies

Had the opportunity to see a late season game. Impressed with the Coach, his Staff and the program and the kids.

Too bad. As someone pointed out --never know about what is going on behind the scenes or other agenda's.

Wish him the best and hope someone is smart enough to pick him up.

Does anyone know if Weston is committed to coaching at a private school, or could he end up at one of the public schools in Jefferson County?

AIRVES, welcome to the site! Check out the following link for some helpful hints about BGP; and feel free to ask a mod when you have a question.

Thanks papa, long time lurker - 1st time poster.

My father coached David at Manual back in the early 70's. He's a good football coach and a better person. Like others have said, no one really knows what goes behind the scenes, but In my opinion a big loss for HC.

There is nothing going on behind the scenes at all . It was strictly a won/loss situation . Winning the3 district is a given at Holy Cross because of the competition in the district . I think Holy Cross would like to get past the second round every now and then and that just wasn't the case anymore since Weston took over . The Desales' of the world are catching up with them and taking key players from them lately and that is not sitting well with BD/AM alumni . As for Weston the person , the man : You cannot find a better one !!!! As classy as they get !!!! This whole situation is unfortunate but in the end will probably be a good move as far as the football program goes . They know who they want and are goimng after him hard . If not their #1 guy then they have a fine list of other candidates too .

So who is their #1 choice?

It it's a won/loss situation, then I would be very concerned about the future of HC football. Weston is one heck of a coach, and I don't think anybody else would have done any better with the players he's had the past few years.

With a winning percentage of .672(!) (41-20), how much improvement in that category does a reasonable person think they can achieve? For the record:

2004 11-2 lost in the playoffs to Danville in the 3rd round by 5

2005 9-3 lost in the second round to Danville, 32-31

2006 7-4 lost in round 1 to Bethlehem by 8

2007 7-6 lost in round 3 to eventual state champ Beechwood

2008 7-5 Lost in round 2 to Mayfield

I saw most of these teams; I thought he got a lot out of what he had, particularly the last three years.

41-20 overall record

Five seasons; five winning records.

Five playoff trips.

Twice making it to the third round in five years

Cougar, you mentioned making it past round 2 "every now and then"...looks like Weston did that, too...

Now, HC did lose to DeSales three of the five years, including 3 of the past 4. Is that what this is all about? Have we degenerated to the Alabama-Auburn silliness where a coach can win the national title and be canned for failure to beat the other team??? How sad if this is true.

Advancement in the playoffs involves an awful lot of things going right. The injury situation, who you draw (the matchups), weather, how much talent is actually on your roster, and just plain good/bad luck all play a part. Holy Cross' playoff record over the past five years isn't bad at all at 6-5.

The fact that DeSales (or any other team) is catching up with them is irrelevant. The Colts' improvement is a testament to Coach Mark Sanders' hard work, and in no way a reflection on Coach Weston and his staff.

Cougar, if this is truly all a win/loss issue, Holy Cross is making a huge mistake.

(BTW...some of us are old enough to know that you mean "Bishop David" and "Angela Merici" when you say "BD/AM", but probably a lot of people don't... ;) )

Let's see, in 2008 HC beat every A school on their schedule except Mayfield in RD 2 of playoffs. They also beat 6A South Oldham and 3A Elizabethtown who lost in RD 3 to eventual state champion Central.

The basketball team is 3-10 right now, is Coach Durham next?

South Oldham is 5A, but you make a very good point... The win over a very good Elizabethtown team was particularly impressive...

Somebody's going to snatch Coach Weston up in a hurry and count their lucky stars that he suddenly became available...

Great argument and way to document your opinion \ position. I agree. I always root and pull for the DeSales and the Holy Crosses..sure hope this was not a "grass always looks greener...." type of deal. I thought the Cougar's had been very competitive as well.

Careful what you wish for...............

Just so people know, I'm not a Holy Cross alum, or even particularly an HC fan. I'm an Oldham County HS Alumni, but grew up in my pre-high school years in the Shively area, and remember well the great Bishop David Falcon teams. Hard-nosed, rugged, blue-collar teams that were proud and tough. Over the past several years, I've seen HC almost annually, as the Cougars have had an ongoing game with South Oldham almost every year for several seasons. As a result, I've followed them each year...

I wish the best for the folks on Dixie Highway... I think this is a horrible mistake on their part, but I truly hope this works out for them...there's a lot of good people down there. And I also wish the best to Coach Weston. I hope it works out that he's able to find something new quickly...

Holy Cross has seemed to be in decline over the last three or four years. It's probably no coincidence that it started after the school took some KHSAA sanctions for allleged recruiting violations.

Probably has more to do with the decline than coaching.

I too remember some of the quality teams at Bishop David and am not an alumni of Bishop David or Holy Cross. When schools played Bishop David, they knew they were in for a battle. Weston is a fine man and I wish him the best. I am not for sure what Holy Cross has in mind for their head football coach. I would just not conclude that Holy Cross is going down hill as a school. Ray Reidinger (sp?) was doing some great things as a football coach. I do not know of all of the details of the "recruiting" violations that led to his exit, though at a gut level I thought Holy Cross was used somewhat a "scapegoat" by the KHSAA. I felt that the KHSAA association knew that Holy Cross could be more easily targeted without much resistence by the school than going after any of the "big boys"--either private or public.

Clarification

I think Homerun is dead on with his opinions . Coach Reidinger AND Holy Cross was somewhat used as an example . Giving away T-shirts to some youth league players is not the end of the world . But , what are you going to do ? It happened and Holy Cross sufferred . Anyway , I feel confident that Tim Weihe will make the right choice . He has a hrd decision because Weston put everything he had into that school . I hipe they get a young energetic coach in there and build on what they have .

Coach Weston (Tubberville) - I know some schools that would LOVE to have that kind of success! Maybe a couple of them will go after Caoch Weston at all cost.

Should x dump glaser for not being able to beat t for the big game the last couple of years?

Coaches with winning records dumped and those that cannot win stay??? Never ceases to amaze me.
