Does Brian Kelly not like Dustin Grutza?

Featured Replies

Have never been a fan of Coach Kelly from the time he arrived at UC for the very reason the way he treated Grutza. He had a perfectly good proven QB when he arrived at UC, but yet had to bring the overrated Mauk in and stick with him, while Grutza got relegated to the bench and always filled in admirably when he got the chance to play, usually leading UC to a win. Then he doesn't even get his job back his senior year because of Pike and others, finally gets the chance and does very well, gets hurt, then when is ready to return still can't bypass Pike, who was atrocious last night. Why not start the senior Grutza in the second half? He may or may not be a good coach, but can't stand the guy

Kelly was on Pike all night like a cheap suit!! I thought that we would have seen Grutza in the middle of the 3rd quarter. I theories of Kelly is that he is a win at all costs type of guy, and last night I didnt see that.

Kelly appeared to be a little out of his comfort zone last night. To stick with Pike last night as poorly as he was throwing the ball is puzzling.

Pike looked lost all night.

Might have been.

I agree Grutza should have been in they stayed with Pike too long IMO. I won some cash on VT. Beamer's experience in a game like that showed over Kelly's inexperience (I know he's done it on a smaller stage but not the Orange Bowl vs a program like VaTech).

The stage may have been a little to big for both Kelly and Pike last night. It's all happened very quick for them. I'm sure they all learned alot about the BCS last night. It will only better prepare them for the future. Having said this I to agree Grutza hasn't had a fair shot at QB since Kelly arrived.

Mauk turned out to be very good. Grutza had been struggling previously so I can understand Kelly wanting to go with Mauk.

Coming into camp this year it was a tossup for the position. Didn't Grutza start the first couple of games then he got hurt?

The only part I will agree with is that I thought we would see #4 last night after Pike struggled.

It's hard to criticize a guy who takes a below average program and leads it to a BCS game. Cincy wasn't even mentioned as a BCS team at the year's start. I see no problem with sticking with the QB who got Cincy there.

Grutza proved against Hawiaa that he was ready to step in and be the starting qb and that he was as healthy as he was going to be. IMO theres no way Pike starts last night espically after Grutza leads the team to that comeback win and proves why he should be starting. Terrible decesion by Kelly to go with Pike over Grutza, yes Grutza struggled his first couple years but he began this year on fire and looked liked a totally different qb than the last few years. Dont know if it would have affected the outcome of the game but my money says the game would have been closer.

The problem with speculating on this issue is the fact that none of us get to see the players in practice each day.

Additionally, none of us are experienced college head football coaches.

One must trust Brian Kelly on why he did not make the change to Dustin Grutza.

You sure about that??? :D

They said last night that Kelly has asked and been granted permission by Miami to talk to Marve (sp?) the QB that left the Hurricanes
