I was 10 when this picture was taken. The first picture of a earth rise from the moon. It was taken by the astronauts of Apollo 8. Apollo 8 was the first time human beings left the orbit of earth and traveled to the moon.

I think that was the date of the moon landing; the photo above was taken on an earlier Apollo mission.

No, that was Apollo 11, the Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins famous first moon landing flight. Apollo 8, 9, and 10, were all designed to make sure number 11 would reach their ultimate goal.

I just remember being on vacation with my Aunt and cousin. We were staying in a motel in Mississippi on the Gulf of Mexico when they landed on the moon. It was awesome. July 20th is also the birth dates of my cousin and oldest son.

I remember hearing of a statement Neil Armstrong said when he walked on the moon. "Congratulations Mr. Trotstky." Something like that. Supposedly, when he was a child his neighbors (the Trotskys) were fighting and the woman neighbor said to the neighbor man she would "be romantic" with him, and then pointing to little Neil Armstrong, the little neighbor boy, "when he walks on the moon." So when he walked on the moon Neal said that and had to give a full explanation to NASA afterwards. Just something I heard.

nWo, as an astronomy teacher, I emphasize the importance of the photo to my students. I am only 34, so the Apollo missions took place before I was born. It is easy for those of us that have lived in a world in which man has walked on the moon to overlook the significance of this photo. My students and I discuss this in depth. Imagine going your whole life without looking in a mirror or a body of water at your reflection. You might have seen bits and pieces here and there (analogous to satellite views) but imagine the first time you truly see yourself. Amazing.

 

I bought "When We Left Earth" (if you haven't seen this, buy it...documents the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle missions...best documentary that I have ever seen.) I remember a quote from Apollo 8 astronaut Jim Lovell - "We went to the study the moon...but imagine when we got there...that we couldn't help but study the Earth."

Prof, you are so correct! Apollo 11 would have never been successful if it were not for the missions of Apollo 8, 9, and 10, which laid the groundwork for Apollo 11.

 

 

It seem's a shame that they do not get proper credit for their contributions of America's lunar missions.

I really wish I could have been alive during the Apollo missions.
