I remember a lot of pride America had way back then.

 

 

 

 

I also wish they'd try to go back to the moon again.

 

 

 

I think it is in NASA's plans over the next 8-10 years.

 

 

 

Amazing how we are "progressing" to the point of doing things we did nearly 40 years ago!

nWo, as an astronomy teacher, I emphasize the importance of the photo to my students. I am only 34, so the Apollo missions took place before I was born. It is easy for those of us that have lived in a world in which man has walked on the moon to overlook the significance of this photo. My students and I discuss this in depth. Imagine going your whole life without looking in a mirror or a body of water at your reflection. You might have seen bits and pieces here and there (analogous to satellite views) but imagine the first time you truly see yourself. Amazing.

 

I bought "When We Left Earth" (if you haven't seen this, buy it...documents the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle missions...best documentary that I have ever seen.) I remember a quote from Apollo 8 astronaut Jim Lovell - "We went to the study the moon...but imagine when we got there...that we couldn't help but study the Earth."

You are correct. Ed White was the first american to exit a space capsule and walk in space.

 

Prof, you are so correct! Apollo 11 would have never been successful if it were not for the missions of Apollo 8, 9, and 10, which laid the groundwork for Apollo 11.

 

 

It seem's a shame that they do not get proper credit for their contributions of America's lunar missions.

Along with not giving enough credit to the Mercury and Gemini programs. Also, everyone seems to forget Apollo 7. This was the first mission after the fire in Apollo 1. They had to completely rebuild the Apollo capsule because of the tragedy. There was a very real possibility that if there was another accident the whole program was going to be postponed and the deadline set by President Kennedy wouldn't have been made.

I bought the boxed set from Discovery.com. It has four disks with two episodes each. My students are mesmirized at them. It was well worth the money!

You are correct. Let's not forget Apollo 7. It was the first mission after the fire in Apollo 1.

Yes, I remember the sad incident that killed the three astronauts. And it wasn't even an actual launch, it was a practice drill.

I was amazed by the space program and like many kids dreamed of being an astronaut. I still have a scrap book of newspaper clippings from way back then.

Do you remember one of the astronauats reading from the bible on Christmas Eve? I don't remember who read it, but i think it was from Genesis. That was amazing.

My son -law's Father grew up across the street from Neil Armstrong in Wapakoneta .

I remember staying up late watching tv while one of the early flights circled the moon. It may have been this one as I know it was around Christmastime. Beautiful picture.
