New KHSAA rule?

Featured Replies

If I understand correctly, the only sport that a player cannot play up on varsity is football... heavy contact sports...no way is this going to include basketball...

don't see it changing anytime soon.

I can only speak of my first hand knowledge from Ohio, but you field teams that aren't competitive most of the time to have numbers. Freshmen teams are becoming rarer and rarer. Kids play both JV and Varsity to fit rosters.

With Ohio's 4 year rule, middle school kids can be pulled up, but they only get 4 years eligibility. So why waste their middle school years? Also, because Ohio has the 4 year rule, I think it is funny how people still say the Moss girl is going to transfer to Lakota West in Ohio. She is currently playing her 4th year of Varsity in KY? She wouldn't be allowed to see the floor in OH due to her 4 years being up.

Middle school players cannot play up in OH. post 12. Moss is in her 2nd varsity year and actually has only played 1 since she has not played this season. Here's my issue with the non rule in Ky. Anyone that supports middle schoolers playing up point to small school and numbers problems. However the practice is very prevelant in the biggest schools where numbers are not an issue. Does playing up help the players. I believe in their 1st couple of years it does. I do not believe they are better by the end of their senior whether they played 4, 5 or 6 years of varsity ball. The team may have been better in that period and I think this is where it all lies. I also dislike the fact that a player can play un limited quarters in any period of time. In OH there is a limit, of I believe 4 quarters in a 24 hour period, and most ludicrous of all (should be in the football forum) is there is no limit for kid playing football. It is feasible that a kid could play 12 quarters of football in less than 72 hours. The KHSAA does not have the kids 1st in any of these decisions. It' sad.

Ky is the main reason for OHs 4 year rule...

Wrestling and soccer too.

Good stuff! I agree with you 100%.

On Moss, she did play varsity as a 7th grader at Heritage. So since she played last year, she is entering year 3? Just hasn't played yet this year in a contest right?

I'd assume that all states allow middle schoolers to play basketball. We don't allow middle schoolers to play football or wrestle.

Add soccer to this as well.

I'm pretty sure middle schoolers are excluded from varsity soccer as well.

(Whoops...just got done reading the rest of the posts. Didn't realize that four other people have confirmed the above mentioned fact.)

Forgot about Heritage. I have a lot interesting conversation with my OH cohorts at work. Their usual response is "you can do what in Ky"? Sometimes it's very embarrassing

Kind of off topic, but why hasn't Moss played this season? Injury?

Considerable differences, as total number of games played and quarter played limit, in Basketball. Can't play 2 games in one day either, if I recall correctly in Ohio.

What is the age rule - cannot turn 19 prior to the sport competing starts?

Cannot turn 19 prior to the school year begining.

This is what I thought in regards to Moss. But then I thought, how did Mayo do it?
