New KHSAA rule?

Featured Replies

Hypothetically; Girls tripleheader; small school low numbers. You ok with the possibility of a talented frosh playing all 3 games up to 12 quarters in one night?

A talented frosh thats playing alot of varsity minutes shouldnt be playing freshmen ball. Especially on a triple header night.

I agree. There is no mandate against it though, as there is in just about every other state.

I personally have first hand experience with a child playing up. I will tell you the same thing I told our school administration when playing up was an issue. I personally know my daughter better than anyone in this world. I have her best interest at the top of my list, not the school's, not the basketball program, or any other sport. She has talent and the last thing I want is an injury of any type.......but let me be the parent. I will make the right decision for my child. LET ME MAKE THE DECISION FOR MY CHILD. My child played on a varsity team (different sport) as a 6th grader and was very competitive. She is bigger than most her age and very athletic and very mature. The worst thing for anyone is to make broad sweeping changes that affect everyone. As for Ohio's rules good for them, but know one has the right to look down there noses at Ky sports, I have done some research on the issue and Ky has no higher rate of negitive incidents involving athletes, (injury, dropping out, etc) than Ohio or other like states.

Kudos for you and your daughter. I hope she has much success. Unfortunately some parents aren't quite like you. I don't have as much of a problem with kids playing up as I do the fact there are no rules dictating the amount of playing time a kid can play.

Good point and I agree 100%. Freshman who play significant varsity minutes should not be playing any freshman ball. Unless they start varsity, I do think that they should play jv when appropriate but again it should be about developing young talent. As for triple headers, I understand the economic reasons but don't really like them because very few programs have enough players to field separate teams. I hate to see schools eliminate freshman teams because of low numbers - most freshman teams in Oldham county have more middle school players than true freshman and it appears to be a trend in alot of schools today.

Honestly, to avoid criticism, I could go with the politically correct answer and say "absolutely not" and be done with it; however, I would feel like, and be, a total hypocrite. I, like many parents, have allowed my Daughter to play 5-10 games over a two-day period "many" times over the past 8 or 9yrs of AAU ball...and never really second guessed it. I also, like many parents, have shuffled my Daughter back-n-forth between soccer & basketball tournaments over a weekend which is much more gruelling.

Many teams have 3hr practices that are much tougher than 12qtrs of playing. If we want the KHSAA to put in a rule to limit playing...do we also want a rule to limit practice length's and # of day's per week? I do not want the KHSAA making every single decision for coaches.

I think it would be very rare for a kid to play a triple header. If so, I would question the motivation of the Varsity coach since they are ultimately responsible for the decision.

Not only does Ohio not allow Middle School players to play up, they also limit they amount of quarters a child can play a night, as well as a season.

They had to file for some kind of waiver, and even then they ended up having to forfeit games. That was why Bill Walker (another player who came with Mayo at North College Hill) left early to go to Kansas State during his Senior year.

I thought Walkers was more about when he was promoted from 8th grade at one school, then he transferred to another as an 8th grader again?

You don't think 10 games in a two day period is a little over the top? 3 hr practice Wow!! Yeah I do want the KHSAA mandating some of this. Your post proves parents and coaches are incapable.

Yes, since he played high school ball in one state, it took away one year in Ohio when he transfered to Ohio and couldn't play high school. It is why as a "Senior" he graduated early and begin at Kansas State and begin playing right away.

It really comes down to a parent being responsible. If you see a situation that is not in the best interest of your child no matter if its athletics or and ill advised field trip in the face of bad weather, then it is the parents responsibility...no its the parents DUTY to remove your child from harms way. I all to well understand that some parents dont think the same way as the majority of parents do, but in that case an athletic event may be the best place for the child.

No, I'm not offended. 10 games of AAU ball is usually roughly 3-4hrs of actual play (at most) unless you play every second and 1) it wasn't every weekend and 2) if you feel 3-4hrs of basketball over a weekend (once or twice per month) is too much...then there is nothing I can say.

She was actually held back a lot, but if she wanted to play and was healthy I was never one to hold her back and still don't. If I had it to do over I would have changed a few things, but I'm not big on living in fear of something negative always happening. If she wasn't in a gym or on a field she was in the driveway or on a court down the street. It's a passion and unless you've been there I can't expect you to ever understand.

Believe me I've been there. 10 games is too much. Our 8th grade team made it too the finals of the KBA a few years back. Played the quarters in the morning and won. The semis were next and unforunately we had to play 4 OTs to win. Yeah only 2 or 3 hours of play. Very competitive and very pyhsical play. We now had to play the finals roughly 45 minutes after the 4OT semis. Kids were whipped. They played their hearts out but just couldn't get over the fatigue. It was sad. Too much! BTW a 3 hr practice is way too long if not pyhsically then also mentally. Of course a knowledgeable parent would know that.

Why didn't his waiver attempt work and Mayo's did? Because Mayo played varsity in 7th and 8th grade. Heck, I think he made the Sweet Sixteen all tourney team as an 8th grader.

I don't know, I am just trying to go through what I remember hearing. I don't work for OHSAA and could care less about Mayo/Walker. I also remember Mayo transfered back somewhere away from North College Hill his "senior" year because he wasn't going to be able to play in Ohio. I do know that when there are transfers from KY and they played Varsity as a 7th or 8th grader, they do lose eligibility, or can lose eligibility. I am sure it is case by case. I am sure if you google the Mayo/Walker thing it will show up something.
