New KHSAA rule?

Featured Replies

Considerable differences, as total number of games played and quarter played limit, in Basketball. Can't play 2 games in one day either, if I recall correctly in Ohio.

Correct only six qtrs. total in one day.

Could it be possible that population differences determine the's rules. Ohio does have a greater population. We played a team in florida last year from Ohio in softball. And there JV team was made up of acouple of juniors and the rest sophmores and freshman. No way is this possible in alot of places in Ky. Just a thought. I wonder what surrounding state rules are.

I'd assume that all states allow middle schoolers to play basketball. We don't allow middle schoolers to play football or wrestle.

Middle schoolers play freshman football. I don't know if they are allowed to play JV or varsity, but I know for a fact they play freshman.

This is what I thought in regards to Moss. But then I thought, how did Mayo do it?

They had to file for some kind of waiver, and even then they ended up having to forfeit games. That was why Bill Walker (another player who came with Mayo at North College Hill) left early to go to Kansas State during his Senior year.

Only 20 regular season contests PERIOD. There isn't any, 4 can count for 2 if it is a classic or tournament and such. 20 is 20 in Ohio. Along with the no contact period's of 30 days from the State Championship games. A coaching staff can only coach/instruct 10 days from a time set up in June through August. Open Gyms can be held, but the coaching staff can do nothing but roll the balls out. A lot of differences!

And someone on this thread earlier was talking about size of schools, you have to remember Ohio has 4 divisions for girls basketball, so in theory the DIV's (small schools) are playing against other schools and not playing the bigs like they do in KY.

Forgot about Heritage. I have a lot interesting conversation with my OH cohorts at work. Their usual response is "you can do what in Ky"? Sometimes it's very embarrassing

I wouldn't say embarrassing, just different. I was just recently exposed to NKY basketball, and as a newbie, I just had to adjust to the differences.

Ohio does look across the boarder and think "wow". But it's also because they don't know all the facts either. The stereotype is that KY teams practice all year long, and all play middle schoolers on Varsity. And that isn't all true.

OHSAA seems more inclined to put the kids first, the programs second.

You are correct...an 8th grader can play Freshman Football...however they cannot have contact practice with the JV or Varsity...or that is what I was told...my son played Freshman Football @ Louisville Male as an 8th grader, Male was extremely careful not to allow him, or the 1 other 8th grader playing up, to have contact with the upper class...in the playoffs, these 2 young men were able to travel with the team but could not even wear a jersey on the sidelines...Coach Redmon was careful not to chance losing a year of eligibility...

You are exactly right. Until they are told, they have no idea that Ohio teams are actually together the same amount of time as KY. Also, Ohio folk's rarely know that KY competes for "1" Championship trophey as opposed to 4 division's. And they cannot believe that KY HS teams can stay together in April & May; however, they (Ohio) come together on June 1st and stay together thru March while KY has dead period from mid-August thru mid-October.

As far as OHSAA, it is my understanding that they aren't nearly as strict and sometimes power hungry as KHSAA. Supposedly, it's pretty easy to win an appeal...unless it's really high profile.

Hypothetically; Girls tripleheader; small school low numbers. You ok with the possibility of a talented frosh playing all 3 games up to 12 quarters in one night?

I am not. That is too much. If they are that small on numbers, cancel the freshmen team! Because more than likely it isn't a one time thing, and then that just is too much wear and tear on a body that would lead to fatigue and possible injury.

I would like to see the KHSAA mandate against this and other critical issues. It's time to put the kids 1st.

110% agreed!!!

I personally have first hand experience with a child playing up. I will tell you the same thing I told our school administration when playing up was an issue. I personally know my daughter better than anyone in this world. I have her best interest at the top of my list, not the school's, not the basketball program, or any other sport. She has talent and the last thing I want is an injury of any type.......but let me be the parent. I will make the right decision for my child. LET ME MAKE THE DECISION FOR MY CHILD. My child played on a varsity team (different sport) as a 6th grader and was very competitive. She is bigger than most her age and very athletic and very mature. The worst thing for anyone is to make broad sweeping changes that affect everyone. As for Ohio's rules good for them, but know one has the right to look down there noses at Ky sports, I have done some research on the issue and Ky has no higher rate of negitive incidents involving athletes, (injury, dropping out, etc) than Ohio or other like states.

If they are good enough to play up and the rules allow it, great. However, then let them play up. Not like it was asked if they should play in a tripleheader all 12 quarters. If a FROSH is good enough to play varsity and get minutes on the varsity team, then they shouldn't be playing that much in a night.
