This is true. I am a Highlands fan and I think it is totally ridiculous. That and scheduling Beechwood. No matter how good Beechwood is, you cannot gain anything by scheduling a class A school. Having said that, Highlands should 3-peat.

I'm sure Dale/A.D. had good reason for it, but as the superior team, I don't see much benefit in playing a lesser opponent twice in the regular season.

 

I was told they are games 1 and 10. Is that correct as well?

The benefit is having ten games on the schedule. He has a hard time getting teams to schedule them.

Ryle is on the schedule as game 2 and game 10.

I don't see a reason why Highlands shouldn't repeat!

One thing that must be clarified is the difference between claiming to be the "best program" in the state and being the "best team" in the state.

 

Often, Highlands supporters state that Highlands has the best football program in the state, an assertion that is often quickly disregarded by supporters of the Louisville "Big Two" (Trinity and Saint Xavier).

 

Most Highlands supporters will admit that during most years (especially recently), the "best team" in the state has been either Trinity or Saint Xavier. However, even the T and X supporters must concede that T and X have some built-in advantages that make it difficult for them NOT to be the best teams in the state on a consistent basis.

 

But when you talk about which program, year in and year out, gets the most out of its players, especially considering its size, then Highlands has to be right there in the conversation.

 

To summarize: Highlands is not the "best team" in the state right now (that's clearly Trinity)... however, Highlands may very well be the "best program" in the state.

For those "off thread," KHSAA would not permit HHS to move to 6A even if they wanted to. (I'm sure LN was going to say this, but restrained himself.) They were permitted to move to 5A because there were not enough 3A or 4A teams in NKy to make a district.

Back to the topic at hand, do not forget that if HHS wins their District, they play in the friendly confines of David Cecil Memorial Stadium until they lose or go to the Pizza Box, whichever occurs 1st. That certainly will increase their chances of success.

As well as tie the record for most consecutive.

You get the idea----a 3 peat used to mean more. Highlands would probably have won the last two years whether it was the old 3A or new 5A, or in the least, played in the finals. But, if it stays 6 classes, accomplishments like this are not going to mean near as much as they used too

 

Be careful with this line of thought. Many things have to line up to win state championships - the right players, working hard, in the right system, w/o too many injuries, playing the right in-season schedule to get ready, a little bit of luck along the way, etc, etc, etc.

 

While I agree that accomplishing a three-peat in a 6 division system isn't quite as big of an accomplishment as in a 4 division system, it would still be a major, major accomplishment.

 

If anyone can do it, Highlands can. Look at what they overcame this season to win the championship: returning only 2 starters from the previous season's state championship winning offense, the preseason loss of probably the best RB in NKY (and one of the best football players in general), the loss of their starting TE and OLB in the 2nd or 3rd round of the playoffs, being down to Bryan Station w/ less than 3 minutes to play in the first round of the playoffs, the father of a player being severely maimed right in front of their eyes as they're leaving for the state finals, and then two fumbles deep in their own territory in that state final game. While I don't want to jinx anything, I'd be very surprised if they face that many obstacles in '09.
