Proposed playoff format

I think it is a great idea and would also eliminate the long period of down time that the players currently experience!

Here is an idea for a 16-team national playoff that I like ... from the blog of Paducah Sun sportswriter Joey Fosko.

Playoff vs. BCS? No comparison

Depends on which side of the fence you're straddling. This would be a financial disaster for the Bowls. Most fans of a particular school cannot travel to more than one neutral site for a playoff game in a month's period. Local fans will not attend if a school of interest is not in the game.

Need an example? Last Saturday's ACC Championship game.

The only way a playoff system can be financially feasible, is if it is done as the Championship Division does it. With the exception of the Championship game, somebody has to be at home or the stadiums are empty. Neutral sites won't work.

All good points

Couldn't you schedule the early-round games geographically, where the top seeds could play at a bowl site close to home, say like Florida in the Gator Bowl?

I have a hard time believing that the "local people" wouldn't come out for a game that is part of the national championship tournament.

As for the ACC championship game ... in all honesty, it was a nondescript game between two nondescript teams, with neither of them remotely involved in the national championship picture.

They also play multiple games at each location and filling a 15k arena is a heck of a lot easier than filling a 60k seat stadium.

Here I've broken down Fosko's seeding down into the bowl games. I'm also assuming all favorites win.

Top 7 bowls for Joey's finals rotation (selected by current pecking order)...

Sugar

Fiesta

Orange

Rose

Cotton

Captial One

Gator

Round One

Picking the 1st eight games to make them regional as westside suggests, but favoring the higher seed ...

Dec. 20 -- Texas Bowl -- (1)Oklahoma vs (16)Va Tech

Dec. 20 -- Eagle Bank Bowl -- (8)Penn State Vs (9)Boise State

Dec. 20 -- Papajohns.com Bowl -- (4)Alabama vs (13)Oklahoma State

Dec. 20 -- Holiday Bowl -- (5)USC vs (11)TCU

Dec. 21 -- Outback Bowl -- (2)Florida vs (14)Georgia Tech

Dec. 21 -- Sun Bowl -- (7)Texas Tech vs (10)Ohio State

Dec. 21 -- Bell Hellicopter Bowl -- (3)Texas vs (15)Georia

Dec. 21 -- Pioneer Las Vagas Bowl -- (6)Utah vs (12)Cincinnati

Round Two

Dec. 26 -- Cotton Bowl -- Oklahoma vs Penn state

Dec. 26 -- Gator Bowl -- Alabama vs USC

Dec. 27 -- Capitol One Bowl -- Florida vs Texas Tech

Dec. 27 -- Rose Bowl -- Texas vs Utah

Jan. 1 -- Fiesta Bowl -- Oklahoma vs Alabama

Jan. 1 -- Sugar Bowl -- Florida vs Texas

Jan. 10 -- Orange Bowl -- Oklahoma vs Florida

I think it's a great idea...

You know, after performing this exercise, I think this could work after all.

Dec. 20 -- Texas Bowl -- (1)Oklahoma vs (16)Va Tech (Probable Sellout)

Dec. 20 -- Eagle Bank Bowl -- (8)Penn State Vs (9)Boise State (Possible Sellout)

Dec. 20 -- Papajohns.com Bowl -- (4)Alabama vs (13)Oklahoma State (Packed House)

Dec. 20 -- Holiday Bowl -- (5)USC vs (11)TCU (Probable Sellout)

Dec. 21 -- Outback Bowl -- (2)Florida vs (14)Georgia Tech (Packed House)

Dec. 21 -- Sun Bowl -- (7)Texas Tech vs (10)Ohio State (Packed House)

Dec. 21 -- Bell Hellicopter Bowl -- (3)Texas vs (15)Georia (Packed House)

Dec. 21 -- Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl -- (6)Utah vs (12)Cincinnati (Will Mormans go to Vegas?)

Man I would love a Final Four in football, I would be in heaven if I got to watch OU/USC and Florida/Texas and then the title game.

Yeah, but if you move it to a more central location, let's say DC, the crowds would be much bigger. The only way this game comes close to selling out, where it is now, is if FSU is in it.

Miami is not going to draw where ever you play this game, and FSU fans will go where the game is, so put it closer to the center of the conference.

Mormons founded Las Vegas.

Any format should have a hot weathern team(southern team so to speak)going up North and playing in the cold.
