I am not saying your idea is good or bad, but this format would all but eliminate any type of OOC game unless it was against a 1-AA school. There would be no point scheduling even a moderately difficult schedule beyond your conference.

 

There isn't anything gained from it now for power conference teams for the most part. If Oklahoma got in over Texas b/c they beat UC and TCU that's a freaking joke considering Texas beat them by 10. USC gained absolutely nothing for pummeling OSU, and obviously it didn't help or hurt OSU as far as getting in a BCS game.

Simply put ... a playoff answers all of the pertinent questions.

They make too much money to turn down a game against the big boys.

You know, after performing this exercise, I think this could work after all.

If you favor the higher seed like you have done, I believe this works. The fans WILL travel a short distance to go see their team and will most likely sell it out.

I have the plan. Who ever wins the SEC Championship is National Champion. Everyone else can play for 3rd. (Naturally whoever is the SEC Runner-Up is 2nd.)

Here were the pairings:

 

1-16 ... Oklahoma vs. Virginia Tech

8-9 ... Penn State vs. Boise State

4-13 ... Alabama vs. Oklahoma State

5-11 ... USC vs. TCU

2-14 ... Florida vs. Georgia Tech

7-10 ... Texas Tech vs. Ohio State

3-15 ... Texas vs. Georgia

6-12 ... Utah vs. Cincinnati

 

Based on what we have seen in the bowl games, I think it's fair to say that Oklahoma vs. USC would be a good pick for the first semifinal, with Florida meeting either Texas or Utah in the other.

After you lose in the playoffs you can go to the bowl your conference is affiliated with.

This is the problem with the "plus one" ... who is the "plus one" team this year? Is it Texas? Or is it USC?

Actually, we can have all the opinions we want to and it won't change it much. With the school AD's brining in the $$, Coorporate execs sponsoring the bowl games and $$$$ I don't look for anything other than a plus one game (if that).

Personally, a plus one game would be the most that I would be in favor of and imo all that we can hope for. I do believe that will happen within a few years.

Other than that we will hear playoff...playoff....playoff untill we are sick of it (I have been for quite a while) and imo the 6/8/16 or however many team playoff proposals are just not going to happen.

Neither one....there isn't a plus one this year. (actually if so it should be Utah)

 

Seriously, jmo but it doesn't matter how many teams that you put in a playoff, the ones just outside are going to complain. (4 teams and #5 complains.....8 teams and #9 is crying, etc.)

That is why the 16-team playoff format works the best ... every BCS team has the way to play their way into the field by winning their conference championship and the teams from the non-BCS leagues can earn their way in, too.

 

Frankly, there are years that the #9 team could conceivably get to the national title game. That is why 16 is the best cutoff ... I don't see a team ranked below that having a shot at doing it.
