The defense has proved itself over the last couple of weeks, and Fugate is amazing, has been all year, he has not been stopped only slowed down once or twice. This is going to be a great football weekend in Louisville.

So can we say that Louisville Central will blow Breathitt out? I mean Belfry had turnover after turnover and Breathitt only wins by 2.

I'd say Breathitt's defense had a lot to do with Belfry turning the ball over...I would be extremely shocked if Louisville Central wins by more than 2 TD's, if they win at all. People outside of the mountians will leave PJCS in shock when they see what Fugate will do to that D-1 defense. He is a man child and their defense is top notch. We (Harlan County) scored more points on them than anyone else did by far this year and we still got beat. Central better bring their A+ game, they barely escaped Belfry last year.

Where are all the Belfry fans? They where saying Belfry will win by 2 or 3 scores. This is what happens when you compare scores like JC beat Breathitt by two TD's and Belfry beat JC by one TD and therefore we {as in Belfry} should beat Breathitt Co. by three TD's. I love Belfry football it is old school it is fun to watch and Pirates had a great season 13-1, but lets all take a look it was close very close 14-12.

Belfry fan here, but to be 100% honest, some Belfry fans are partly to blame. They get on here and other sites, and brag about how good we are, compare scores, say how good Belfry is and tell the Jimmy and Joes they are so great.

Belfry came out flat and was not ready to play because they thought it was in the bag. The lack of fans tonight also blew my mind.

Complacency has set in with some Belfry fans and players.

Surprised, but not completely shocked at this outcome.

Excellent defensive game plan. The Bobcats did whatever it took to stop the dive play and forcing the QB to keep or pitch. The Bobcats were fast enough to close inside to out to limit damage wide. Forget defending the pass with anything but man coverage.

Mr. Fugate was the offensive gameplan. And it was just enough.

(Here's hoping my favorite team gets to play the defending 3A Champions next year !!)

Belfry...what can be said ? Just...sometimes the turnovers come at the worst possible times. I'm sure it makes it especially tough after having the offense take good care of the ball this year. Turnovers (and holding) are absolute killers of Haywood's drive-oriented offense. This one just wasn't fated for the Red.

But still, GREAT ride this year for the Pirates. Congratulations to you all !

(I'm hoping my favorite team will resume playing you guys again, also)

...

I don't think there's really any "blame" involved. In all fairness, Belfry's team has "walked the walk" many times. Maybe there is some complacency, but I doubt it's avoidable with Belfry's recent years of success.

OTOH, sometimes a win just isn't meant to be. Three turnovers in the red zone is a pretty good indicator. ;)

I wouldn't be so hard on the team - they've earned the benefit. And being hard on the fans serves no real purpose.

Not a total surprise ... Breathitt's rout of Estill last week was a sign that the Bobcats were legit.

Congratulations to Breathitt County. They came to play and did a fantastic job. Belfry moved the ball well at times, but they had to earn every yard. They were horrible inside the red zone, killing themselves with turnovers. Fugate is a stud on both sides of the ball, a lot of fun to watch. The decision to go for 1 instead of 2 for Belfry never came into play. Belfry had their opportunities but just couldn't get it done. Give Breathitt County all the credit for that.

Good luck Bobcats next week against Central. :thumb:

Sorry Watusi that your Pirates lost. Sounds like Belfry got beat by a very good team. Belfry nonetheless, had a great season and its players, coaches and fans will continue to hold their heads very high.

Congrats to Breathitt County and good luck next week. Central is good and very talented.

Congratulations to Breathitt. Good luck next week.

Nice job by the Bobcats. Its amazing how they continue to win games when the opponents dominate the TOP.

The defense seems to have mastered the "bend but don't break" strategy. Time and again opponents have embarked on long, grinding, time consuming drives, only to be stopped in the red zone. The ability to hold in the red zone and keep teams off the scoreboard, combined with an offense that produces enough big plays has been a recipe for success this year.

Looks like the Bobcats arrived a year ahead of schedule...hopefully they can pull off another huge upset next Friday and bring a fourth trophy back to Jackson.

But, if Belfry was a tall order, Central will be a skyscraper.

My heart broke when I learned of this outcome last night.

Congrats to Breathitt County on a very nice win! Represent the mountains well next week.

Great season Belfry.

Based on his continued outstanding performances and his overall statistics for his high school career. Channing Fugate should be a candidate for Mr. Football next year.

Last night, when BC was ahead 14-10, preparing to punt from its own end zone with around 2 minutes to play, I told my wife that if I was coach, I'd be tempted to snap the ball out of the end zone, take the safety and free kick it. I know that was risky, but here was my thought process...

Belfry had come close on a couple of earlier punts and the way Breathitt's defense had played, I had confidence they could hold. IMO, the only way Breathitt loses at that point was to mess up on the punt and give Belfry a TD. Sure enough Belfry blocked it, but the ball bounced our way and it only cost us two points.

Of course, the downside to that strategy is that it means a FG will beat you. All things considered...1) performance of our defense, 2) conditions, weather, and 3) time...I felt confident that we could hold.

Again, as it turns out, Belfry moved the ball in a short time, and had they not fumbled it away, I have a feeling things would have been real interesting at the end. So, who knows if taking a safety would have been smart in that situation, but I'd have sure thought about it.

Also, cannot figure out why Breathitt took the delay of game penalty. I'm pretty sure they had a TO left. That made no sense whatsoever. In the end, those 5 yards may have assured that blocked punt only cost us 2 instead of 6. A game of inches...that was certainly true last night.

A couple more things....

One, a question for Belfry fans. Some people were questioning the decision not to go for 2 on Belfry's TD. But, to be honest, the decision I question was much earlier than that. Trailing 14-3, late in the second quarter, Belfry chose to go for it on a 4th and 3 or 4 inside the 10 yard line. Earlier in the game, they kicked a FG. I really thought the decision to go for it there was questionable. If Belfry gets the 3 points there...they would have won the game the way it played out.

I really thought they should have made it a one possession game at that point. As a Bobcat fan, I'm sure glad they didn't. I'm really pleased and excited at the way Breathitt's defense played last night...they really did a good job of holding their own with Belfry's physical attack. It was nothing like last year when the Pirates were into the second level before we even touched them.

Secondly, Breathitt and Belfry has given us a little bit of everything over the last 10 years....

In 1999, a back-and-forth shootout that ended with Breathitt winning 47-42 on a late TD pass and our QB throwing for almost 600 yards.

In 2000, a controversial finish with a questionable touchdown "reception" in Jackson that helped Breathitt County win a close ballgame, 28-20.

In 2001, Breathitt lead 26-7 in the second half, before Belfry rallied to steal one in Jackson, 27-26.

2002 gave us undoubtedly the worst field conditions I've ever seen a football game played on. And, Breathitt delivered what was the most dominant 7-0 game I've ever seen, until two late TD's made the final 21-0. I think Belfry finished the game with 61 total yards.

2007 saw the renewal of the rivalry after a few years off. Breathitt rallied from some early Belfry dominance to cut the lead to 1 point with under two minutes to play in the first half. But, mistakes and Belfry's ability to capitalize resulted in two quick TD's before the half ended...then another to start the third quarter and this game turned into a rout that nobody expected. (We may have expected Belfry to win by double digits...I just didn't expect Belfry to roll up 62 points.)

And, now, last night gave us a low scoring, defensive struggle that could have gone either way...

Until we meet again...

Hopefully next year.
