Central scored on their first play from scrimmage on a 39 yard run by Anthony Wales to go up 7-0...

 

Etown countered immediately, driving 80 yards on 7 plays. Michael Thomas for 5 yards through the air to Mitchell Henry tied it at 7.

 

Contrary to what the "updates" thread said, Central never led by the score of 14-0.

 

Central's Stephan Robinson turned a little screen into a 75 yard TD run near the end of the 1Q... 14-7 after one.

 

Robinson caught a 47 yarder in the 2Q to account for the 21-7 Central lead at the break.

 

Etown moved the ball at will in the first half, despite trailing by 2 scores. They were thwarted in the 1st half by two Thomas picks, one of which came off a tipped pass, and a knee injury to starting RB Cody Withers, which sent the senior to the hospital. Withers had 65 yards rushing on just 5 carries in the first half, plus one catch for 13 yards, before leaving the game. He was headed for a career night when he went down; without him, the Panthers had almost no running game to speak of. (In fact, Etown finished the game with 65 yards rushing as a team...Withers had 65, the rest of the team netted 0).

 

Central rushed for well over 300 yards and had total offense of over 500 yards... The two teams traded TDs in the 3rd, with Thomas connecting with with Titus Sublett for a 27 yarder near the end of the third to make it 28-14.

 

Chanse Hughes - who had all three of Central's second half scores, all on the ground - scored to make it 35-14 early in the fourth, but Thomas connected with Sublett again in dramatic fashion. On the play before (third down), Thomas was knocked around while losing three yards. Etown called time out, facing 4th and 10 at the Central 20. This also gave Thomas time to regroup, and he threw to Sublett in the right flat...Sublett not only got the first, he ran it in for the score to pull Etown within striking distance at 35-21 with about 8 minutes to play.

 

But Hughes got his third rushing TD of the second half late in the period to put the game away, 42-21.

 

Interestingly, all five second half scores were by two players - Hughes (3 rushing TDs for Central) and Sublett (2 receiving TDs for Etown).

 

Etown - The loss of all-world WR Chris Gohmann (1750+ yards receiving, 26 TDs) last week, plus the loss of leading rusher Cody Withers this week was just too much to overcome. They lost the turnover war, 3-2. Against a team like Central, they needed a break or two, anyway, but Central got the two "breaks" in the game...a tipped pass that Central intercepted...and a Central pass that was tipped into the hands of a waiting Central receiver for a TD... Clayton Patton did a superb job filling in for Gohmann, catching 6 passes tonight... Titus Sublett had a monster game, perhaps the best game of any player on the field, catching 5 passes (2 for TDs), intercepting two passes, returning KOs and Punts, and was one of the leading tacklers for Etown tonight...

 

Central - Over 500 yards of offense...nothing fancy, just well-executed by extremely talented athletes. Coach Scroggins has this bunch playing very well. Wales and Hughes were an extremely tough 1-2 punch in the backfield, and Robinson is awfully tough to catch in the open field. Interior of the OL did a great job of carving open holes between the tackles tonight. #4 Patterson (LB) is huge - 6'5" - and an imposing presence in the middle of the defense, batted down one pass tonight at MLB.

P.S. - Kudos to Central for a FABULOUS stadium! One of the nicest stadiums I've been in.

What about Central's QB, he has been getting all the press as Central's big offensive weapon, but it sounds like the other guys carried the load tonight?

 

On defense, did Cobble, Patterson and Wilson show you why they are highly recruited? They are all studs.

Chris King, the Central QB, has been their leading rusher...but they let Hughes and Wales carry the primary running load, and both delivered. Etown gave up more between the tackles than they usually did when Central tried to get to the corner.

 

King has a better arm / accuracy than I expected. I was impressed with his passing. He's a very dangerous runner; quick and elusive. Central runs a lot of fake handoffs and "double fake" handoffs, and sometimes he leaves the ball in there a bit long, trying to sell the fake, and we thought the Jackets were lucky not to fumble the ball a couple of times, but the bottom-line is, he gets it done. Very poised under fire. He's truly a difficult player to stop; he may handoff, pitch, throw, or run...

 

Defensively, Cobble and Patterson were particularly impressive. I didn't think Wilson stood out all that much, but if I were watching the game again on film and could focus more on him, perhaps I would think differently. Cobble recovered a fumble by Thomas in the fourth and nearly took it to the house...a defensive lineman's dream...Patterson's long reach made him a very problematic LB to throw near...

 

This is a very talented team, that may well win it all again. They're always a threat to score at anytime, from anywhere on the field (last night, they led, 14-7, and had just 2 first downs...their three first half scores came from 39, 75, and 47 yards...)

It appears that Belfry and Central are on a collision course for a rematch of last year's title game. I know, chickens aren't hatched yet, but this has been pretty much what most folks saw coming.
