This is a surprising score to me. I thought Mason County would win this one. Congratulations, though, to Mason County on a great season. I think it's just as well you don't have to make the long drive to Belfry the face the buzzsaw that Russell faced tonight anyway. :-)

 

I'd say they would have looked forward to the long drive to Belfry vs. losing in OT tonight. This was a kick in the gut loss. Not to take anything away from SC, but many of us thought Mason had this one. I guess thats why its called the 'playoffs'... the teams just get better each week.

Mason had everything going their way after recovering an on-side kick and scoring to tie the game at 20-20. Extra point and Mason is in the driver's seat with about 2:00 left. Mason lines up to kick and right before the snap the cannon gets shot off which scared everyone. The Refs quickly lined everyone up and we missed it wide left. Mason then gets the ball back and go down the field but after a run for a first down a holding penalty makes it

3rd and ten and Pawsat ran a sweep for seven yards. Then on 4th down, we go four wide and run a QB sneak that went no where. That is when the momentum switched. After we did not score in OT, there was no way we were going to keep SC out of the endzone. It was a wonderful cold game that Mason had plenty of chances to win at the end, but our Kicker got iced by our cannon. Great job by Mason on a great season. I didnt like that call either. I was thinking something off tackle. SC lives to fight another day. I expect a closer game this time with Belfry. Not calling a win but dont see it being a blowout either

Congrats to the Royals on the fine season and District Title!

 

SC has a blueprint they sue in the postseason to pull upsets. Tonight they executed it perfectly! They eat clock and wear teams down, all the while building their confidence.

 

Belfry is about 5 TD's better than SC, but as evident two years ago in the regular season meeting, if Belfry doesn't play focused ball next week and SC uses their blueprint then they could fall victim as well. SC has a very, very tough team and a Coach who takes vchances to pull the upsets. They have me worried.

Hey 'gravey' - I'm sure Coach Buchanan beat himself up all night with the woulda, shoulda, coulda... He obvioiusly knows how to coach and call the plays or they wouldn't have even been playing last night. 9 wins - 3 losses and beating Russell at Russell (1st time in school history) and you want to jump on that call? :irked: Please...

Graveytrain---ever stop to ponder that maybe that wasn't the "call?" Sometimes folks read the wrong play on the wristband. Sometimes coaches allow players to check out of a play that they may not like. Just a few guesses there.

 

Newarkcatholicfan---I would say after not hitting the chip shot, (PAT) the staff wasn't too comfortable in attempting a FG from the hash from a further distance. That would probably be my guess.

 

To all you other folks who want to second guess "play calls." I GUESS that you were extremely happy with all the "calls" including the onside kick that got the Royals back into the football game after being 13 points down with less than 6 minutes to go.

 

Some of you all get on here and spout off about calls and this and that. It is really a shame that we didn't have this message board 13-14 years ago before David Buchanan got to Mason County. During that time I'm sure you would have had plenty of time to complain about "CALLS," being that Mason County only had three winning football seasons before David Buchanan got to Mason County. Since 1996, basically all he has done is turn around a TERRIBLE football program and turn it into a consistent winner and competitor.

GREAT POST!!! I agree 100% I would never second guess a coach but by NO MEANS would I ever second guess Coach Buchanan. He is an excellent Coach and has proven he knows what it takes to turn a program around. In defense, which is truly not needed, that call would be one that 9 out of 10 times would pick up that 3-4 yards. They may have seen a tendency, maybe it was a personnel match-up that looked great, having confidence that your OL can get the push needed, etc etc etc. Again, great post PUP and I'm sure if the Mason County Fans are not pleased with Coach Buchanan there are a large number of schools that would bend over backwards to get him off your hands!! Great job Coach Buchanan and the fine young men that are THE ROYALS! Keep up the great job!

Now, I did not go so far to say coach made a mistake. I was asking the thought process on why he did what he did. As a fan I know the coach knows way more than I do especially about his own team.

I was not second guessing the coach. I have met coach a few times and have nothing but respect for him. I did not want to be like so many posters and and come off like I was saying he was wrong or he should have did this or that. I directed my question to the coach becasue as I posted he post on here and he has answer questions before. I hope this clears up any doubt on your part or any others why my question was asked.:thumb:
