St. Xavier 72 Nelson County 7

Featured Replies

No, I know that, but 72 points isn't backing off. I just don't like that in prep games. St. X may have been trying to send a message to the state, but then the whole state replies, "oh well they played nobody."[/quote No messages need to be sent. All 100 kids played in this game. Defense scored, special teams scored, 3rd and 4th and 6th string backs scored. If X wanted to send a message they could have scored 200 points easliy. It is what it is.

What is St.X supposed to do, take a knee on every down once they are up by 40?

I can't claim to know for sure how the score got that high but I am pretty sure St.X was already sending in their subs by the second quarter. Are you supposed to tell kids that don't get to see the field much to not play hard?

You are right Pep. I was at this game. No offense to Nelson County but the only way they had a chance was if St. X walked off the field during the game. It was sad.

Describe to me what you consider "backing off?"

I am an outsider looking in on this one, but is it necessary to score 72 on someone?

The field is only 100 yards long and we are talking about St. X here. I have a feeling that 72 points IS their backing off.

X could have probably scored 150 if they wanted to.

Nelson County has had injury troubles on defense since they lost their defensive leader in game 1. As a result, they've struggled to stop middle-of-the-road teams. It wasn't hard to figure out going into this game what was going to happen against the overwhelming No. 1 team in the state.

Coach Bruner has done a great job just to get the program to this point, when you consider where it was when he arrived. If NC fans are patient, and buy in at all levels, he'll get the program built back up.

I know all about the pros & cons of the playoff system.

That being said - the outcome in this game is just the reality of the system.

It was a well known fact throughout the statdium that ST. X scored their first 35 points midway through the first quarter before Nelson County actually tackled a ST. X player.

Scores came on a fumble return by the defense, a punt return and three long offensive scores on the first play of drives. Never tackled once! Don't think I will ever witness that again.

Maybe the KHSAA should ask Bridget DeVries to attend some of these 1st round mismatches to get a real feel of the disparity that a six class system is creating.

I have heard nothing but good things about him.

That is a heck of an idea. Perhaps she could serve as an Honorary Head Coach for the #4 seeded team(s). Gauge the atomsphere on that sideline.

I don't know if anyone has noted this as yet, but St. X. played the entire ballgame without their starting quarterback, one of their two starting running backs, and their leading wide receiver.

This was just one of those games where no matter who was playing for the Tigers, everything on offense, defense, and special teams seemed to work exactually as the coaches would diagram it.

There was definitely no intent to run up the score.

No one with any knowledge - or who has followed HS football this season- should have any gripe about the outcome.

AGain - do not think it mattered who X put on the field. This was going to be a blowout of huge proportions (and it was) - just as the rest of their games will be.

With the exception (Hopefully) of one;)

You cannot tell your kids to stop playing. If the third string can run off tackle for 15 yards, whose fault is it? Not X's. And if the first string stayed in a series or two longer than some would heve liked (which I do NOT think they did), then just remember that the coaches are also coaching for the next few games. NC just happened to be the "Brooklyn Brawler" of the week to X's "Ultimate Warrier" team.

One of my relative's college coach used to say after a blowout, "Don't blame them. Get better."

Nice old school analogy! :ylsuper:
