Arizona 29 San Francisco 24

He's a first time head coach that has to get use to things like time managment. He will be a great coach.

I agree. Under Mike Nolan I do not think we see Shaun Hill lowering his shoulder to try and get the first down. Then after he lost his helmet he still plowed ahead and reached the marker. Singletary has instilled competitiveness and energy into the 49ers and with him at the helm I think they will be okay.

If you are San Fran, and you run it trying to win, don't you run it with Frank Gore?

Or how about spiking the ball a little earlier and having 30 seconds to get 3 plays ran instead of 2 running plays in 20 seconds.

Singletary had just finished reading the unabridged version of "How to Finish the Game" authored by M. Lewis.

I'm a lifelong 49er's fan and I'm obviously disappointed. The good - Singletary definately had the team motivated. They came out ready to play and took it to the Cards for most of the game. The bad - They have no clue how to get the ball to their best player (Gore). The QB did a good job on most plays, but made some horrible decisions (the flip INT). The 49er's have no pass defense. The UGLY - what the heck happened at the end of the game? I don't mind the running play with Gore on the first play. What I do mind is the 20+ seconds that were wasted spiking the ball and then freaking out and running it up the middle with an ex-college QB.

Mike Martz is saying they thought it was 4th and goal from the 1 and that they had no idea the ball was moved back to the 2 1/2. They couldn't hear the ref and nobody came over to give them an explanation. I'm still not sure why they only ran 2 plays instead of 4 but I agree w/ San Fran that a ref should have gone to them to explain why the ball was moved back and what down it was.

3 passes and then a 4th down run with Gore if it comes to that...

Gotta play the odds in that situation, and that gives you the most chances. NFL coaches never cease to amaze me with their lack of game management skills.

Guys, I know many think Singletary is destined for great things, but to me he has yet to prove to me that he belongs in the NFL coaching ranks. Since Singletary has been named head coach, he has...

1) Got in a shouting match with Vernon Davis, on the sidelines

2) Dropped his pants at halftime

3) Mismanaged the final minutes of Monday night's game

4) Threw Martz under the bus

5) Claimed that he needs an additional coach along the sidelines to calm his emotions

All of this is part of the learning curve, I know. I am not saying everything he has done is bad. But in my book, he is nowhere near ready to take over an NFL team.

But the question then becomes, why not spike the ball and re-call a play? I read where Martz said if they moved it back to the 10 they still would have run that play because it had been called. Spike the ball on third down, and you're only going to get one play anyway.

I agree, I think they were confused as to what down it was too. SF is claiming they couldn't hear exactly what was going on b/c they couldn't hear the ref. They think a ref should have come to the sidelines to explain why the ball was being moved back and that it was 3rd down and the clock was going to run. They spiked it before the review, so I could partly see the confusion.

Mike Martz has to be on the list of most overrated coaches in the league.

For a guy who is considered an offensive genius, I'd be appalled if my team hired him for anything. It's amazing to me that a guy who underuses stud RB's, like Faulk and Gore, to a point that should be criminally prosecuted is considered an offensive "genius" and a great offensive coach by so many so-called experts.

No. He is not. I might be crazy, but I believe I, and several other BGP members, could call plays and manage our talent and games better then he does.

If I were Singletary and they kept me beyond this year, my first move would be to find a new OC...or, at the least, relieve Martz of his play-calling duties so I could at least make sure Frank Gore got the ball enough.

Abysmal play calling, I think they should have spiked the ball on third down to have some extra time to think about the situation.

Then they had a common sense error. It was 3rd down when they supposedly spiked the ball. Had that play counted, yes, it would have been 4th Down. But a play can only be reviewed before the next play. So if they were reviewing the result of the 2nd Down play, then the spike clearly didn't count.

Not to mention, had the refs counted that play, there was an offensive penalty that would have required a 10 second runoff and likely ended the game.

Martz is just looking for someone to blame other than himself. Singletary is still trying to figure out why Mike Nolan quit showing up for work...

I agree and that's why right after the game I said someone should be fired before the plane lands.
